Just a note to acknowledge the passing of Robert B. Sherman, one half of the famed Sherman Brothers song writing team, who together wrote the music and lyrics to some of the most beloved music of my childhood.
It's difficult to think of a mid-twentieth century children's movie that didn't feature one of their magical scores. The brothers had a way of bringing together words and music that not only told a story but captured the imagination.
I think my favorites are the score for the movies Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but there were so many more. Another personal favorite was the song It's A Small World (after all), which they wrote for the 1964 New York World's Fair. I was seven years old at the time, and seeing those audio animatronic dolls singing was the most magical thing I'd ever seen.
Please use this diary to share your memories of your favorite Sherman Brothers songs.
Here is Hushabye Mountain, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang:
A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain
Softly blows o'er lullaby bay.
It fills the sails of boats that are waiting--
Waiting to sail your worries away.
It isn't far to Hushabye Mountain
And your boat waits down by the key.
The winds of night so softly are sighing--
Soon they will fly your troubles to sea.
So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain.
Wave good-bye to cares of the day.
And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain
Sail far away from lullaby bay.
Thank you Mr. Sherman. Your work with your brother has brought joy to many people around the world, and because of you it really is a small world, after all.
