Thousands of nurses and other protesters gathered for a rally Friday afternoon at the Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago — the first big protest tied to the two-day NATO Summit, opening Sunday, that will bring President Barack Obama and other world leaders to the city for two days of talks.
Clad in red shirts and scrubs and green Robin Hood caps with feathers, nurses and other protesters marched across downtown to the Daley Center for the rally organized by National Nurses United, the nation’s largest nurses union, who were joined by members of the Occupy movement, unions and veterans.
Demonstrators, bused in from across the nation for the event, chanted. “Hey, Wall Street, heads up, the people won’t give up” and sang “Taxing Wall Street” to the tune of “Dancing in the Street.”
The nurses got an early start outside the Wrigley Building, crossing the Chicago River and marching west on Wacker Drive. They kept to the sidewalks, stopped at stoplights and created no apparent problems for the police looking on. They got some encouragement from a group of Jamba Juice employees but also a shout of “Yay, capitalism!” from one passer-by.
They’re calling for a “Robin Hood” tax of 0.5 percent on financial institutions’ transactions to offset cuts in health care, social services and education.
