It is curious to see Mitt Romney the apparent nominee as the Republican Party presidential candidate. It will be interesting to see if he is made the candidate at the convention. This, in my opinion, is noteworthy given the fact that all American presidents with one exception have been Protestants. That exception, J.F. Kennedy was assassinated before he could complete his term. Every 4 years we go through a frenzy of vetting candidates for office on their character, opinions, stands on issues and their religious conviction. Watching the quiz that takes place over and over where candidates have to assure voters that their beliefs are true to Christ is just amazing given how we assert that America is a tolerant country. This is a proof, I think, of Arnold Toynbee's description of the "tyranny of Christianity." The history of Christian conquest of the world has been to undermine existing native religions and then ban them. All non-Christian religion have typically been identified as "devil worship," and often in the past 2,000 years Jews have fallen into this category as "Christ killers." According to Toynbee, all Christian countries in history have maintained the monopoly of religion by repression, discrimination and legal or quasi-legal murder and intimidation. One can hardly imagine a Mormon as president in this context.
Given this perspective we will be treated, I am sure, with a host of attacks on Romney before and after the convention and should he be elected I cannot imagine they would abate or stop. During the recent campaign we saw a number of interesting interpretations of Romney's beliefs. The Rev. Franklin Graham stated that he was not a Christian. That while Mormons regarded Jesus Christ as a savior, other beliefs they held were not acceptable (http://www.newsmax.com/...). Texas evangelical leader Robert Jeffress, the Baptist megachurch pastor who introduced Rick Perry at the Values Voter Summit, called Mormonism a "cult"

NewsMax reported Dr. Richard Land, a leading figure in the influential Southern Baptist Convention, tells Newsmax TV he does not consider Mitt Romney and other Mormons to be Christians — and likens Mormonism to Islam (http://richarddawkins.net/...).
“Fox & Friends” host Ainsley Earhardt argued that Romney was "definitely not a Christian," (http://www.washingtonpost.com/...).
It will be a most curious summer.
