And it's not even hot outside yet...
Yesterday started at 5:30 am - I had to prep things for a Tea Party at the library (real tea, not political nonsense): brewing gallons of tea and bottling them to carry to the library, baking cookies while it was cool enough to tolerate the oven being on (I have one window unit and it only cools the snuggery - the rest of the house is not cooled. Cooking can get brutal), and doing some essential yardwork.
Yes. Mowing.
I'd hoped mowing just before the heat struck would kill the grass in my yard. I was not so lucky.
Mowing.
And then, I had a meeting to be told what my new! improved! job duties were.
And then I had a meeting for bartering some sewing for some video. Got stood up.
And then it was 11:00 and I had to head for the library for both a ConCom meeting for OctopodiCon and to set up for the Tea Party.
And then we had the Tea Party and it was very successful. There was a riveting face-off in the Captain's Cat game we played between a 9 year old and a 32 year old. Who would have the better vocabulary? They were on the letter "M".
Sadly the young girl lost, but only because she froze under pressure. We all praised her for her quick wits and outstanding (if morbid - one of the words she used early in the round) vocabulary.
We discussed steampunk and steampunk RPGs and LARPing. We passed around a paper with resources listed, and I showed the board game books I had and suggested that making modern steampunk oriented boardgames could be fun.
We discussed materials and possible games, then told everyone when and where the next Tea Party would be.
Then I had a meeting with the hotel and convention center.
Then I had to go help my daughter do some yard work at her house. Since she became a vampire, she's needed help with the stuff that's not illuminated by her flood lights.
Then it was 10:00 pm. I signed on to DKos for half an hour, then went to bed.
Up this morning at 6:00 so I could finish some yard work (not mowing today - pruning and weeding - quiet stuff until it was daylight enough to haul out the power equipment). When it was late enough, I hauled out my chainsaw and hacked down some large saplings growing where they shouldn't grow, hacked up some more of the Zombie Maple, and when I was done with that, I took the dogs in for their weekly grooming.
Now, I have a trip to Tulsa to make for the meeting I was stood up for yesterday. That's 4 - 5 hours of driving I hadn't counted on, plus tolls, so adding another $45 to the expense of the barter and I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it. I've already invested $200 in costs (not time or skill costs, just materials, gas, tolls) into it and so far gotten nothing back.
Sometimes I am not pleased with people. I expect better.
When I get back, I have laundry and dishes and grocery shopping to do. My shopping will be temperature based - if it looks like it will be cool enough to cook my lunches for next week, I can buy cheaper ingredients. If it's still too hot, I may have to buy some stuff that I can use in my assorted appliances.
People ask me why I buy so many appliances to cook things, and I suppose I should admit that it's because I like cooking but stove and oven cooking is too hot in my uncooled house. I can cook rice and pasta and steam veggies in the rice cooker, and cook meals in the crock pot and bake cakes and breads in the cute little electric appliances I have, and cook entrees in the Ready Set Go device, and not heat my whole house. Otherwise, when it gets this hot, I'd be eating nothing but raw veggies and fruits and nuts, and maybe cold cereal.
So, I buy these appliances and get to eat a better balanced diet. Plus, when appliance cooking, all I have to do is plop in the ingredients and 15-30 minutes later, I have food. And I can do other things while the appliances tick along cooking things. I don't have to hover, stir, adjust, and tinker - it's fill and go!
Tomorrow starts early, too, as I have to be at work by 6:30.
Well, I have to go gas up for the Tulsa trip. Y'all have a relaxing day and tell me about it so I can fantasize. I'll respond when I get back because I can do that while I do laundry and cook.
