Wanda Rohl at Speak Out!
Roughly 60 citizens of the 16th Congressional District in Illinois spent two hours getting to know Wanda Rohl, our “Citizen Candidate” for Congress on July 21, 2012,
Among those present were several folks who shared individual struggles such as physical disabilities, underwater mortgages, attacks on public sector jobs, and issues surrounding veteran’s benefits and student loans. Each posed questions related to their particular struggle and Wanda offered direct, thoughtful responses that once again demonstrated her dedication to the real issues facing the people of our district.
Although the crowd enthusiastically applauded each of Wanda’s responses, nothing brought greater enthusiasm than when she reaffirmed her determination to refuse donations from national organizations and Super PACS.
“I want to keep this a true grassroots campaign. We want to keep this to local small donations and support from local organizations,”
Wanda said. In contrast, her opponent, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, has already amassed more than $200k in out of state and Super PAC funding. Wanda made her reasons clear by adding:
“I want there to be no mistake that my loyalties are to the people of this district and not to corporate special interests, unlike my opponent.”
Wanda recently issued a public challenge to Mr. Kinzinger, asking that he join her in rejecting outside and Super PAC funding but has received no response from his campaign.
Building on that theme, DeKalb, IL Democrat Bill Moore drew an impassioned parallel between Wanda’s determination to run an all-volunteer campaign, one that forgoes the kind of outside funding embraced by Mr. Kinzinger, with the story of David and goliath. Although the parallel has been apparent to campaign staff and audience members since the campaign started, it hit home in powerful way when Mr. Moore equated the armor handed to David with Super PAC funding, when he said:
“David felt his armor was too cumbersome and that it would get in the way of his being able to fight, so he took it off and placed it aside.”
Just as David’s armor proved a burden, so would big corporate and Super PAC money prove a burden when fighting for the people against those special interests had she accepted their campaign contributions. Wanda prefers to fight the fight armed with the support of the people, regardless of the magnitude of the funding raised against her.
Although Wanda offered great insights into her positions on key issues and offered encouragement to those facing various struggles, one message that everyone walked away with is that Wanda is NOT for sale.
Wanda and The Rohl For Congress campaign want to thank the DeKalb County Democratic Party and its members who worked so hard to put this event together. We also thank all the folks who shared part of their weekend with Wanda and gave so generously whether volunteering or with their donations. We are all in this together!
