We've had some fun in the last few weeks. However, the intention of Indigo Kalliope was ever to promote serious poetry from left wing and working class writers. So please indulge me this week and please, please, sign up for the next few open dates with your poetry of the people.
In my humble opinion, government has too long been in the hands of lawyers, accountants and, in general, those with the imaginations of slugs.
Imagine if artists, poets, musicians were an integral part of running this country. Just imagine.
Peace
CJ

The Health of Nations
the strength of a nation
is measured in three important ways
the physical well-being of its people
their tolerance for others unlike themselves
and, most important, their ability
to help the poorest and weakest in their midst
when the idle rich of any nation
complain that those who have few resources
are simply lazy and looking for hand-outs
from government, they are repeating
the time honored refrain of the greedy
as they attempt to keep all for themselves
never realizing that the lesson of history
dooms them to burial in a crumbling sarcophagus
to be later pillaged for its gold and jewels
by jackals who will give no thought
for their brittle bones in no way
mighty, legendary, eternal
better far to pen a single sonnet
to be remembered by many
down the ages as a token of the love
borne by one enchanted young man
for his beautiful and unattainable lover
on a hot and steamy summer night
this poor benighted teenager of a nation
will not be cured until the artists, poets
musicians, dancers, writers are, at last
given a seat at the table of state
time to grow up America. get out of bed.
time for some real life, some real solutions.

The White Curmudgeon Club
Lincoln must be wrong, we know better
In our orange hued and pasty faced
Never chopped a log in our lives
Protected by our mommies and
Copious trust fund educations
Holding on to the last vestiges
Of white supremacy in a superpower
Fast diminishing in world importance
As the relevance of the Western way
Becomes a subject fit for historians
The old white men and women sit back
In their high backed wing chairs to
Reminisce about how things used to be
Before the East took over the world
As both India and China became those
Who set the tables of the world
Without the violence and bloodshed
That came with Western rule
And the white curmudgeons lament
That the time of killing has gone forever

Blue Dogs or Pink Elephants?
An intelligent and intellectual man
Who has chosen to serve his country
In the face of blatant racial barbs
From men with brains so twisted
By their lust for dominance
Over the lesser races in their eyes
That the peccadilloes of his predecessor
Are laid squarely at his feet. As if
He had the power to control time
In a nefarious plot to make those
Who came before respond to his bidding
Even worse, some members
Of his own persuasion (so they say)
As if drunk, agree with these troglodydic
Morons in a bizarre tribal ritual
Which has the world, and thinking
People everywhere, scratching their heads
And asking “Is there no-one in America
Who can stem this tide of idiocy,
This flood of nonsense which threatens
To tear apart the very fabric of the nation.”
Can this nation save itself from itself?

Could not resist! The audio was made in the 1950's the video from 2000:
Are you Listening?
I hear all of you young
brash, know all the answers
don't tell me, heard it all
before won't make
the same mistakes
as you did mom and dad
why then are you talking
incessantly on an ATT cell
watching FOX TV and
ESPN garbage sports
falling down the rabbit hole
of blah blah do as I say
when you could be in charge
of every moment of your life
making the world instead of
responding like rats in a maze
you have the chance to bring
the world closer together
or else we die

Obamanazing
How did a nation of pimply faced
Spoiled by their indulgent mommies
Overfed, foot stamping teenagers
Become players on the world stage?
The mature nations of the world
Needed brawn without brains
For much of the twentieth century
And paid a terrible price
A price by giving Baby Huey
A seat at the adult table
When it came time to eat
Their atroceous manners ruled
Now a world-wise leader
Attempts to bring the teens
Some adult manners and behavior
Despite their cries of foul
Will it work? Who can say?
Stupidity runs deep
In the young and deaf.
Only time will tell.

And finally a wonderful poem from BeadLady's 81 year old mother, who says
Maybe this will explain to you what is in my heart.
I am so concerned for our Country and this is the only way I know how to express it.
Phyllis
My heart is heavy
My thoughts are troubled.
The country I love and adore
Is no longer that country anymore.
One Nation Under God is split in two.
It is now the nation of Red and Blue.
The suffering of so many Americans is very real and true
and is not being felt by only a few.
There are those who have forgotten the oath they have taken,
and now it is the 99 percent they have forsaken.
Please realize how far this despair has spread.
I shudder to think what for America might be ahead.
In a few months we will be able to decide,
and I hope and pray ALL Americans can vote with pride.
I pray that both Party's will work as a team
so that all Americans can achieve the "American Dream".
As an added concern a religious issue has come to the fore.
A woman's right to choices for her health concerns,
and I am afraid this is just the beginning and there will be so much more.
The troop's are coming home to a country that is worn and torn.
Is this what they fought for? They must feel so forlorn.
They gave up their lives and the pursuit of happiness to go to war.
To come home to no jobs, they had no idea what was in store.
What is wrong with those that they cannot see?
If only they would pass the jobs bills so this would not be.
Please get jobs back home to the USA and put our people back to work.
Is this not the American way?
I am an 81 year old woman who is saddened and filled with fear that the country I love is being torn apart.
To think of what is ahead for my children, grand children and great grand children just breaks my heart.
So Please Dear Lord stop this political war at home before it's too late.
So again we the people can pledge to America the United States.
