I have to point this out because I bleed maize and blue: All three Supreme Court candidates nominated by the Michigan Democratic Party have ties to the University of Michigan. Connie Kelley attended the University as an undergrad before going on to Wayne State’s Law School; Shelia Johnson graduated from Michigan Law; and Bridget Mary McCormack has been a professor at the Law School for the past fourteen years, where she currently serves as Dean of Clinical Affairs.
It may be cliché, but these three women are among the leaders and best in the legal arena. McCormack, Johnson, and Kelley will make exceptional Supreme Court Justices, who will be committed to integrity, fairness, and not allowing special interests to have special influence in their rulings. Unfortunately, this commitment to fairness is often lacking on the current court. As an example, insurance companies have won 28 out of 28 cases during Justice Markman’s and Justice Zahra’s tenures on the court; Michigan patients, families, and children: zero.
Yes, this election presents a huge opportunity for the Dems to take back the Michigan Supreme Court; but more importantly, it is an opportunity for confidence to be restored in the judicial branch. Public confidence in the Supreme Court has been depleted, but these three extraordinary candidates can restore integrity to judicial branch of government.
