Of course everyone with any decency is appalled at Rep. Akin's recent statements about "legitimate rape", "shutting the whole thing down" and so on. Rightfully so. And we should continue to hammer him on this. But it is likely that many Republicans know that rape can, indeed, lead to pregnancy.
The essential Akin, though, the part that the Republicans put into their platform, is different, and it comes later in his remarks:
But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.
In this portion of his remarks, Akin mentions the fetus and the rapist. He does not mention the woman. This is central to conservative/Republican thought on all issues related to women: They don't matter.
This is why 30 Republican senators (and no Democrats) voted to protect rapists.
This is why Akin and Ryan sponsored a bill to redefine rape.
This is who they are, this is what they believe. Women don't count.
Well, in my world women count.
And they vote.
