From the Michigan Democratic Party:
LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party kicked off Supreme Court Corruption Week Monday, September 24 by filing a complaint with the Judicial Tenure Commission because of Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and candidate up for reelection, Stephen Markman’s unethical campaign conduct in speaking to an Oakland County Republican Party’s 400 Club breakfast fundraiser, an event that featured Markman’s attendance on the invitation.
“Justice Markman violated the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct when he spoke at an Oakland County Republican Party fundraiser,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer.
Canon 7 of the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct requires that judges separate themselves from political parties by barring them for making speeches on behalf of a political party and forbidding them from soliciting campaign funds.
“When Judge Markman speaks to a Republican fundraiser, he violates the trust of Michigan’s citizens,” said Brewer. “Michigan deserves a Justice that will protect families, not political parties. Markman should spend less time helping child pornographers, Manny Moroun, insurance companies and corporate special interests, and more time protecting families, seniors and children.”
Each day this week the Michigan Democratic Party highlighted instances of corruption from Justices Markman and Brian Zahra (both up for reelection), as well as from former insurance industry lawyer and fellow GOP candidate Judge Colleen O’Brien.
