We all have heard about crowdfunding, I wrote about it here. It's a vehicle by which money is raised for important projects which are not on the agenda of government or private budgets. The projects usually are not popular with private entities because they tend to favor the common good and not the bottom line. Government budgets are so stressed at the moment that the challenge is not adding projects but preserving what we have. So it is that we are having to use creative means to carry out some of the most important work of our generation.
Climate Change research is moving fast and furious, as it must. For decades we focused primarily on the reduction of C02 as the primary agent of global warming. That is appropriate as C02 is the major culprit in turning our atmosphere into a heat trapping blanket. In fact, we focused on the theory of reducing C02 for so long and without any real action that we find ourselves with the necessity of finding other means for a faster solution to reducing greenhouse gases to buy us the time to reduce the long living C02.
And we have found some of those solutions in the rapid reduction of the short lived climate pollutants. But more research needs to be done and we can have a hand in it.
In The Dark Snow Project researchers including Kossack and climate scientist Jason Box are seeking to raise $150,000 usd to finance a Greenland Expedition to better understand the climate impact of the major short lived climate forcer; Black Carbon or Soot
Let's let Kossacks Bill McKibben and Jason Box tell us how:
I have been writing about reducing the short lived climate pollutants as a rapid necessary component for short term fast cooling in conjunction with continual progress to reduce the much longer living C02. We are seeing an acceleration of extreme weather events which are making a fast cooling solution a necessity to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.
So I am sending in my small donation right here, or as much as I can spare to help this project. Please send this around if you know of others who might be so inclined.
