ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A teenage boy fatally shot two adults and three children inside an Albuquerque home, authorities said Sunday.
The boy was arrested and booked on murder and other charges in connection with the shootings Saturday night, Bernalillo County sheriff's spokesman Aaron Williamson said.
The victims' identities haven't been released, and the boy's motive and connection to the five victims weren't immediately unknown. Williamson said investigators were trying to determine if the victims were related.
Investigators also were seeking to determine who owned several guns that were found at the home, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle.
We don't know enough to understand exactly what happened, but it is assumed that if he had a spatula and not a semi-automatic weapon, a lot of people would have died as well.
What happens in most of these cases is that we come full circle. The argument goes like this:
We should remove or stop sale of some guns.
Only criminals will have guns, then we are all victims. I refuse.
So you think we should have more guns.
We should have more guns.
Gun murders rise.
We should remove or stop the sale of some guns.
There are now more guns in circulation, and who will have them except criminals.
This never ending loop is repeated because the expectation is held: "We pass a law and nothing changes." In the end, any policy change made will take years, maybe even decades to have a truly meaningful impact. But we are so focused on instant gratification that the argument will continue.
We should remove or stop the sale of semi-automatic weapons.
But then only criminals will have semi-autos. I should have a semi-auto.
It's funny the NRA argues about concerns of a "slippery slope". So far, the slope continues to move the other way.. we move to ban some assault weapons.. and a few years later that ban lapses and isn't restored. Weapons are revised to become more powerful, accurate and cheaper and yet, we can't move the goal post to stay in touch.
Complete Hyperbole, but I feel like this in the middle of some arguments:
The slippery slope is rolling away from us the wrong direction. Don't put any limits on, say the NRA. Tomorrow, a criminal might have a rocket launcher. Then only criminals will have rocket launchers. I need one too.
Reasonable restrictions at the consent of the masses are a key step. Period. Accept no substitutes.
