I was very happy to see this headline in The Washington Post
Virginia bill on electoral college change appears headed for defeat
According to the article, Governor McDonnell and two Republicans on the committee have come out against the bill. With a committee of eight Republicans and seven Democrats, the two republican "no" votes means that the bill will not get out of committee.
McDonnell's response was interesting (and does reflect McDonnell's desire not to appear too extreme to be considered by centrist voters nationally)
“He believes Virginia’s existing system works just fine as it is,” McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin said via e-mail. “He does not believe there is any need for a change.

I think that the spotlight that the Democrats have shined on this effort by the GOP is helping to defeat this bill in Virginia. I hope that the elected officials in other states considering these types of bills will also decide not to pursue them.
We need to keep the pressure on!
