Captain Kos wrote this diary on the new rule regarding TTFN diaries: you write one, you are officially 'gone for now' (bojo), and have to request reinstatement to come back (TTFN stands for Ta Ta For Now).
There is an excellent reclist diary on bullying and its relation to TTFN/GBCW that I would highly recommend reading, for all of its content EXCEPT that it seems to imply that Kos's decree is too harsh because there can be 'intellectual bullying' at this site. That diary, and others that I've seen on the reclist and through the recent list, are missing the point, which is under the squig:
The point of this updated policy is NOT to further bully, marginalize, etc someone who has hurt feelings or who is not happy with the environment at Daily Kos right now. It is not a "you express feelings against the site, you're bojo'd" announcement.
What Kos, in my understanding, is trying to do is keep people from making dramatic, attention-grabbing announcements that they are leaving, thereby artificially gaining eyes for what they have to expound on.
Some points:
There is a helpdesk for issues related to trolling, bullying, as well as community moderation through the HR system.
There is nothing KEEPING you from leaving this site, therefore no reason to title a farewell diary with big all-caps acronyms that are known to be attention-grabbing.
There (was) nothing KEEPING you from returning after you said TTFN! Nothing to hold you to a particular time frame or any claims you made in the diary.
Captain Kos addressed and is dealing with the TTFN behavior, which was essentially a dramatic attention-grab, fully recognizing exactly what it is. Let's not frame this new TTFN rule as some sort of uber-harsh despotic measure, nor pretend that we don't have several back amongst us that successfully petitioned for reinstatement after getting bony status.
