Your Physical Illness May Now Be Labeled a Mental Illness
If you Think you are Physically Ill years before you get Proper Diagnosis, You can now be Labelled Mentally Ill with:
Somatic Symptom Disorder
A person will meet the criteria for SSD by reporting just one bodily symptom that is distressing and/or disruptive to daily life and having just one of the following three reactions to it that persist for at least six months: 1) 'disproportionate' thoughts about the seriousness of their symptom(s); or 2) a high level of anxiety about their health; or, 3) devoting excessive time and energy to symptoms or health concerns.
Glad I was diagnosed with Scleroderma in 1994, because I was complaining of all kinds of physical issues for over a decade: severe fatigue, unexplained pain, infections, depression, severe bowel problems, etc., etc. Several doctors back then did say 'It's all in your head." " You're just getting older." "Of course you are over stressed, you're a single mom." etc., etc.
Eventually my kidneys crashed and my body went into crisis mode and finally a gastroenterologist, after all kind of tests, diagnosed my scleroderma. I will always be grateful to that doctor! All my depression disappeared because finally there was an answer as I knew something was wrong and I wasn't nuts. My Physical Complaints were Validated.
But now it won't be so easy for those of you who 'know' your body ain't working right.
The new DSM 5 will be out in May with the above NEW Mental Illness Label.
Among the professionals who fought hard against the inclusion of this new diagnosis is Allen Frances, M.D. who was the chair of the DSM-4 Task Force and of the department of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC. He is currently a professor emeritus at Duke. He has just written a comprehensive article about this development: “Bad News: DSM 5 Refuses To Correct Somatic Symptom Disorder.” In it, he says:
"Somatic Symptom Disorder is defined so over inclusively by DSM 5 that it will mislabel 1 in 6 people with cancer and heart disease; 1 in 4 with irritable bowel and fibromyalgia…For reasons that I can't begin to fathom, DSM 5 has decided to proceed on its mindless and irresponsible course. The sad result will be the mislabeling of potentially millions of people with a fake mental disorder that is unsupported by science and flies in the face of common sense."
Somatic Symptom Disorder could capture millions more under mental health diagnosis
