I get that CPAC is fun to cover. Listening to the right wing speak to their base and push out one liners crafted for our Twitter society entertains us much like a Steven King novel or movie. We all sit around and say, "Can you imagine if these folks actually had the power?" (They actually do in my state and its more like a Greek tragedy.) Today Sarah Palin is living up to her reputation and is currently reeling off the one liners as fast as Andy Kroll from Mother Jones can tweet them. But, the real deal is going down in Michigan. It has been since the Republicans pushed through their Emergency Manager bill and now the you know what is about to hit the fan as the take over is on in Detroit.
If you have followed the passage of this law and its implementation, you know that rather callously the Republican governor in Michigan can and will take over local government entities his administration believes to be in financial crisis. An un-elected "emergency manager" will then be appointed as a pseudo dictator and the duly elected officials of the community or school board are left powerless. Essentially local elections in those communities are overturned.
To me, this is unconscionable. And, now, Detroit is set to have its "emergency manager" appointed in late March. I think every reporter worth their salt in that area of the country should be booking a room in the Motor City. I have an idea. It's probably not practical, but I'll go ahead and put it out there.
Why comply Detroit? Your power is being usurped I think in an unconstitutional way. Detroit has not rebelled against the state. It hasn't declared its independence or tried to become a part of let's say Ohio. Let's have some civil disobedience. Why doesn't the mayor tell the city police department to refuse any order from state officials? Tell city government officials they are to remain loyal to the elected officials of the city or lose their jobs. Tell the state police they are to leave the city jurisdiction if they refuse to comply with the will of the people in the locality. Just refuse to comply with the "emergency manager". You have no power without the consent of the governed. Why not direct city police to arrest the "emergency manager" if he/she tries to usurp the city government? Make a scene I say.
Just an idea.
