I have it from an impeccable source that it will be Spring by Earth Day Weekend and especially on Saturday, April 20th. It just must be because that is when Chicago Kossacks will be getting together for an outdoors outing (couldn't resist). Our co-leader, the ever-vigilant broths, has made us a wonderful offer, too.
She and her husband will be treating us all to pizza in their home after we celebrate the Earth by getting down in the dirt at Highland Park's wonderful little gem the Heller Nature Center.
From the website:
Celebrate Earth Day with our fifth annual day of conservation and environmental stewardship. Help Heller staff by volunteering to improve our natural areas for wildlife and visitors alike. Please dress for the weather and for getting dirty!
Sat Apr 20 9am-Noon FREE
They won't kick us out of the park at noon, of course. That's just when the volunteering officially ends.
As to transportation, the Metra UP North Line leaves Ogilvie at 8:35a and arrives in Highland Park at 9:24a. Transportation from the station will be provided. There will also be at least a few people traveling by auto who would love to have your company!
So how does it sound? Some volunteer work, some getting outside and becoming one with nature, and pizza! broths has also advised that the Center has a place for us to change (if necessary) and clean up if we get into Nature a little too much.
Let us know in the comments whether you will join us or have any questions. We hope you will be able to enjoy this event but if you just simply cannot do it, we hope to have another event in May in the city. Suggestions for that will be happily accepted in the comments, too.
Everyone is invited, whether you are an official Chicago Kossack or not. Until you've been to a gathering of the tribe, you won't know what you've missed.
