So on to the next installment of my experiences working as a meat cutter in a meat packing plant. One of the first and most depressing parts of the job is the physical plant and crew areas...in a word it sucks, its a old masonry block building built in the 1960's and never upgraded. The cut room floor is different though that space looks like a NASA factory but every where else is dull dreary soiled broken scuffed and so much more.We start in the parking lot that is used by up to 1000 cars.It was paved 20 years ago but now the broken pavement just adds to all the bumps, bomb craters, and mud holes.Next is my locker room .They needed more space so what was once a shower room had 2 foot lockers installed on top of each other and the bathroom is off to one side and the 1950's plumbing is in such disrepair that the toilets routinely over flow and the floor is sloped into my part of the locker room so i start my day in 1 to 2 inches of raw sewerage which I will walk in, take off my shoes, and put on my rubber boots all while standing because there are no benches..I than put my home shoes in the same locker that my equipment is stored in so the contamination is spread from the floor to my locker, to my tools.
The rest of the plant is pretty much like this. The bathrooms that service the cut floor are made for about 20 people but there are hundreds all coming off the floor at the same time with only 10 mins to take a piss and only 20 spots to piss in so they use their imagination and the walls, the drains the trash can....I do think if the place was kept up and nice maybe the job wouldn't suck so much but 12 hours plus in the shit hole just weighs on you in a emotional way that cant be described .
