I created a new WhiteHouse.gov petition today:
We petition the Obama Administration to use First Lady Michelle Obama's health initiative to create, develop a national,"Portable Farmer's Markets To GO" for urban food deserts.
Good nutrition and healthy eating are virtually impossible in urban food deserts.
Food pantries require people to take buses or walk to specific locations to obtain food, and a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables are rare.
Neighborhood food pantries, corporate sponsors and volunteers can cooperate to create an optimal national program plan of "Farmers Markets To GO" - trucks with ONLY affordable, fresh produce that will dependably take healthy fruit and vegetables TO urban areas of need, on a regular, predictable twice-weekly schedule, and sell directly out of the back of the truck.
Instead of trying to get bodegas, convenience stores to offer fresh produce at affordable prices - bring the fresh, affordable, SNAP benefit-approven fresh fruits and vegetables, at affordable discount prices, TO urban food deserts.
I really love this idea, and wish I personally had more time right now to create a 501C, organize it, get corporate sponsors, create routes, get a national organizational plan implemented! One urban poverty food desert center at a time, working with the mayors and community orgs.
Some day I will do this. Sooner rather than later, I hope. But for now, please sign support of this idea, to help create national "Farmers Markets TO GO" for urban food desert areas http://wh.gov/...
I would appreciate any retweets to help get the petition signed. Need 100,000 sigs nowadays.
Thanks - and eat some healthy fresh baby spinach with tomato, feta cheese, walnuts and olive oil for dinner!
