It's totally a man-of-the-people thing to run for office in the state where you have a second home, right?
Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is flirting with the idea of another run for Senate—in New Hampshire. Apparently banking on Granite State voters getting excited about carpetbagging losers, Brown has been courting audiences in that state and, Thursday,
refused to rule out a 2014 run against Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, also a former three-term governor and state senator—all in the same state, New Hampshire.
Brown emphasized his connection to New Hampshire throughout his remarks. He noted that he’s been invited to speak in the state four out of the next five weeks.
‘‘New Hampshire’s like a second home,’’ Brown said. ‘‘I was born at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. My mom and sister and family live here. Spent summers here growing up. Have a house here. Been a taxpayer for 20 years.’’
Mr. Pickup Truck-Driving Everyman has a home in New Hampshire, in addition to his primary home and three rental condos in Massachusetts and the timeshare in Aruba. And since the Boston media market—where Brown, of course, has had a lot of coverage, since Boston is in Massachusetts, where he's been a state and United States senator—extends into New Hampshire, residents of the state are very familiar with him.
The Shaheen camp is clearly excited about the prospect of a challenge from Brown, based on the volume of fundraising emails coming from that quarter. There's a lot for Massachusetts Democrats to like about the idea, since even for someone with Brown's high capacity for ridiculousness, it would be at least a little difficult to talk about running for Senate in New Hampshire two years after losing in Massachusetts, then turn around and decide to run for Massachusetts governor, while being a lobbyist and Fox News personality all the while.
But hey, if none of these options work out, maybe he could run for something in Aruba.
