Counterparties: The economics of flying blind
The leaders of the G20 met in Washington today; their official communique was sent out, like any grand pronouncement, as a Word document posted on a Russian website.
The world’s most powerful finance ministers and central bankers appeared to be working through some serious confusion today. Even India’s finance minister seemed a bit puzzled by all the talk of Europe: “It was supposed to be a G20 meeting, but for a moment I thought it was a G7 meeting”, he said.
Three days after a grad student dismantled the widely-held idea of a 90%-of-GDP tipping point for national debt, the G20 agreed to move away from the idea of setting specific national debt targets. This a big change — just three years ago, the G20’s richest nations pledged to cut their deficits in half by this year. Now, as Reuters notes, Europe is not just re-thinking austerity, but promising to slow it down.
Apparently, both parents returned to Dagestan and the mother was interviewed by phone from Makhachkala, Dagestan. No doubt the parents are in shock, and she says things that are similar to what the father has said. When she talks about how they were "controlled", Reuters says she used a Russian word that means "monitored". She is their mother, so the key takeaway, for me, is not so much the claims that they were set up, but the claims that they were monitored for three to five years.
Boston suspect was under FBI surveillance, mother says
In her interview with Russia Today, Tsarnaeva suggested FBI officers had visited her home when she still lived in the United States and told her that Tamerlan "was really an extremist leader and that they were afraid of him."
[...]
She did not say whether the FBI had started to take an interest in Tamerlan although she also referred to the security services' interest in what Internet sites he visited.
U.S. government officials have said the brothers were not under surveillance as possible militants.
But the FBI said in a statement on Friday that in 2011 it interviewed Tamerlan at the request of a foreign government, which it did not identify.
It said the matter was closed because interviews with Tamerlan and family members "did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign".
Here is the interview on RT. It is not clear to me whether there is one or two interviews referenced in the Reuters article above (they mention RT and Russia One).
Tsarnaev brothers' mother: My sons are innocent, this is a setup
Boston bombings suspects are 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who remains at large. His brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnayev, was killed after a police car chase. Their family originates from Russia's North Caucasus - but settled in the United States more than a decade ago. Scahill starts out talking about how he got his start by begging Amy Goodman to let him work with her, unpaid, and how things developed from there. Scahill: "The main thing I've tried to do as a journalist is to tell stories of people who otherwise wouldn't have their stories told." He goes on to talk about how things have changed in our wars, that "all bets are off" and that the rules of engagement have been fundamentally changed since 9/11.
Jeremy Scahill Talks Drone Strikes And Obama's Dirty Wars Part 1 and 2
Last week, during the start of the Dallas International Film Festival, Red Carpet Crash film critic Nathan Ligon got the unique opportunity to speak to foreign war reporter Jeremy Scahill about his new film Dirty Wars. The conversation was a deep, opinionated, and impassioned one that I think you will find a bit eye opening. I hope you enjoy this interview and that you will check out ‘Dirty Wars’ when it hits theaters this June.

Congress: We're planning the largest online protest since SOPA. Vote NO on CISPA sooner rather than later.
CISPA -- the bill that would END our online privacy and violate the 4th Amendment -- will go to a vote in the House today. We're planning the largest online privacy protest in history to stop this bill. Can you contact your reps now to warn them?
What's wrong with CISPA? (in as few words as possible)
As it's written, CISPA won't protect us from cyber threats, but it will violate our 4th Amendment right to privacy.
It lets the government spy on you without a warrant. (read more)
It makes it so you can’t even find out about it after the fact. (read more)
It makes it so companies can’t be sued when they do illegal things with your data. (read more)
It allows corporations to cyber-attack each other and individuals outside of the law. (read more)
It makes every privacy policy on the web a moot point, and violates the 4th amendment. [...]

#NOKXL Blogathon: April 12 - April 22, 2013
860,000 Comments Submitted!
As of today, around 860,000 comments have been submitted so far and forwarded by our coalition partners to the United States Department of State. Please help us reach and, even, exceed our goal of one million comments opposing this pipeline.
The deadline for submission of public comments is April 22, 2013.

You Can Make a Difference
On March 1, 2013, the United States State Department released a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the Presidential Permit application for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The SEIS evaluates the potential environmental impacts. The purpose of this campaign is to obtain one million public comments in opposition to building this environmentally-destructive pipeline. We hope that this blogathon will make submission of public comments easier.
This effort is being coordinated with Bill McKibben of 350.org and in coalition with the Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, League of Conservation Voters, Natural Resources Defense Council, Oil Change International, and Bold Nebraska.

We have an exciting line up of prominent lawmakers, environmental activists, and Daily Kos diarists. Each one of them will be posting a diary in opposition to the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline. Some guests will be including a brief "sample comment" that readers can copy and submit at the State Department website. The diaries and "sample comments" can be used as your comments! Readers who have specialized knowledge and skills relating to the pipeline, tar sands, climate change, or the petroleum industry may, of course, choose to create their own comments with additional details.
Comments written by you are reviewed by our government with no media filter. Three of our coalition partners will keep track of the number of comments submitted to the U.S. Department of State.
Please submit your comments through one of the below links:
- "A Million Comments Against Keystone XL" - 350.org will deliver your comments directly to the State Department and has a system set up so that you can customize your comment.
- "Tell President Obama: Reject Keystone XL!" - Sierra Club has a sample public comment that allows you to personalize your message.
- "Tell the State Department: #NoKXL" - Oil Change International has a very helpful template to formulate your comments.
