During both of his campaigns, Barack Obama stressed that there were no blue states, no red states, only the United States of America.
He sent a signal that he would not be a partisan President, but would represent even those who did not vote for him.
With the nomination of James Comey to be the next FBI director, President Obama makes good on his pledge to give a voice to non-Democrats.
Comey is a former Bush deputy attorney general and so the Bush people, denied an active role with the election of a Democrat, get someone who espouses their values. Which is neat, of course, because it's so bi-partisan even if Comey is a bit right of center.
Beyond his Bush link, Comey also will bring representation to a neglected group, hedge funders. Proving that he is President of all the people, President Obama has nominated in Comey a man who was general counsel to Bridgewater Associates. For you hippies, Bridgewater was started by Ray Dalio, a disciple of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Dalio, according to wikipedia, denies that the company is a cult, so that's good to know.
On the plus side, remember when Gonzales went to Ashcroft's hospital bed to try to get him to sign off on warrentless surveillance? That thing we used to be against? Comey was the guy who stopped it, as Ashcroft passed the decision to Comey, who turned it down.
So it might not be a Democrat but in this day when Democrats can't get a vote it looks like this might be the most decent Republican we'll get.
