Sen. Jeff Merkley
Marriage equality will be on the ballot in Oregon in November 2014. So will the re-election of Sen. Jeff Merkley, but that's not making him cautious. In fact,
he's leading the way in stumping for the repeal of Oregon's gay marriage ban.
Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley was among the community leaders participating in the first Summer of Love campaign event. [...]
Merkley was joined by several hundred volunteers at the event held in the basement of Sunnyside Church in Portland.
Merkley told Oregon Public Radio that the state's civil rights laws were lacking.
“But that framework is incomplete until we allow the full rights of marriage for all our citizens,” Merkley said.
The event was a chance for volunteers to organize in preparation for Oregon United for Marriage's
efforts to get the necessary 161,284 signatures to get the repeal on the ballot and for the ground effort for the campaign. The signatures probably won't be a challenge to get. On Valentine's Day, the organization turned in
twice as many as necessary sponsorship signatures to start the initiative process. Oregon is ready.
