What is the cost of covering for a friend doing something wrong?
Infidelity can be deadly, but so can ennabling. I learned that back in Mexico.
My street.
"
Oiga, cat. Can I borrow your house tonight?"
"Pues, si. What for?"
"You sure it's okay?"
"Of course. Mi casa es tu casa. I'll be in La Yosta most of the day. What's it for?"
"I have a special meeting."
"Why don't you use your own house?"
"My wife would get really mad."
Then, what I should say is, "No, I'm not going for that."
What I actually do is mumble in resignation, "Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh."
Too late. I can't say "no" now.
"Who is....?" I stop myself before finishing. I don't want to know. Besides, I'm heading off to another tiny little pueblo 5 miles away to teach English. When I come back it will all have been over like it never happened. I hand over my keys & leave in my blissful ignorance. I begin my long walk to the next pueblo. Maybe nothing will happen. Maybe my friend is making the whole story up for bravado's sake. Even if it is true, what can go wrong?
It is sprinkling as I begin walking back home in the evening time. I've gotten about a mile or 2 on the dirt road when it decides to come down really hard. Suddenly I'm drenched, & there is nothing to put on my head except grass and a few rocks.
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
I see a pickup truck coming from the pueblo I just left. It is kicking up dust something fierce on the dirt road.
"Salvation," I think. I give the gesture all locals use, & the driver stops so I can hop up on back. There is some canvas covering wood & I sneek mostly under it.
Bumpety-bump-bump-bump. Riding is harder than walking, but a bit dryer. The driver is going too fast. The canvas flies off & I barely manage to grab it before the wind takes it to some distant sierra.
Then I see the shotgun. Campesinos in this area don't carry weapons. I turn to peer into the cab, & then I recognize the driver. I've never talked to him, but I know who he is, just as he undoubtedly knows who I am. Pueblos 5 miles apart know each other's business like you can't imagine. He is "famous" for coming every other weekend to visit his girlfriend in my pueblo, and also for being a fanfarron (macho braggart). She has less than a stellar reputation. Wait...this isn't a weekend!
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
"Infidelity looms, shotguns bloom, truck goes boom,
& p**ing soon" continues below.
Latest Updates on Kossack Regional Meet-Up News Below the New Day sunrise cloud
Girlfriend cheating on her boyfriend. Married man cheating on his wife. Man in the middle sitting in the rain in the back of a truck. Not feeling good. Wet, & now with a sore butt from the ride.
And why is this shotgun over here with the wood?
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
I try to tell myself that it isn't his girlfriend in my house with another man. I try to tell myself the moon is made of green cheese. It does no good. I try to tell myself that he's heading for a different part of the pueblo...even as he turns off onto the cobblestone lined street that leads to my house.
And why is this shotgun over here with the wood?
No thanks.
I knock on the window pane for him to stop. I offer him some pesos for gas, but he gruffly refuses. I thank him anyways & head off in the direction of the plaza, away from my house.
This isn't my finest hour ever. I feel guilty walking down towards the plaza.
"What if he shoots them as they're leaving my house?"
"Wait...how does he know they're at my house?"
"Will he break down the door if no one answers?"
"Does he think she's going there to meet me?"
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
Slinking towards the plaza with my head down in the rain, I can't figure out any of it. The one thing I know is I can't wish any of it away. I've got to do something, but I don't know what. I turn around & head back towards my house. Sure enough, there's the pickup truck parked about a block away from my house. The streetlight reveals the driver & his friend sitting inside the cab. Sitting & waiting. For what? For someone to open the door to my house or for someone to walk up to the truck in the dark?
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
I press up against an adobe wall and try to think very quickly. I don't succeed in that. The minutes somehow go by. I've long since stopped paying attention to the rain or how wet I am. My knees give way & I find myself sitting on my sore rear in the mud. I wouldn't say I'm scared out of my wits, but I also wouldn't say I'm not. My head is resting against a wooden door. I have some kind of the vaguest idea of a plan to jump up & shout whenever I hear my front door open.
I see the driver get out & lean over the hood of the truck. He seems to be pointing something at my house. I wait. And wait. The rain increases in ferocity & I can no longer make out if the figure is still leaning across the hood.
Bravery is needed, but I forget where I put it. I fall asleep. A loud "Boom" wakes me up. I think the worst has happened, but it is only the driver getting back in the truck & slamming the door shut. I fall back asleep.
Bringing in the milk.
I next awake to the brightness of the sun on my face. It feels good, I am alive, but I wonder why it is still raining. A donkey had come over & is peeing on the wall next to me, careful not to miss my shoe as well.
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
I shift back, but hardly care. People are passing by on the way to & from the mercado. No one is gossiping. They are pretending not to notice that so & so's donkey is peeing on the pinche gringo pendejo. Nothing has happened. Somehow, no violence has occurred.
I am just starting to stand up, grimacing as I do so, when the very elderly Doña Aricelli (rumored to have run in her distant youth with the local bandit Pablo Candelarias-until he tired of her punching him out) non-too sweetly chastises me from across the street for "shaming yourself by getting drunk and sleeping it off in the street."
Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh.
I don't argue. You don't argue with Doña Aricelli. She's half-deaf anyways (the remaining half only hears agreements). I just apologize and promise I'll never do it again. She now tells me not to forget that today is the day of the peregrinacion were I can atone for my sins.
I thought I just had.
Day of the Periginacion, & of the "spot on" donkey.
Life went on uninterrupted by my presence in the
pueblo. I only miss it on the weekdays...and the weekends.
My friend & his wife are still happily married. I still don't know if his announced tryst was actually consummated, idle bragging, or some perverse scheme. The guy with the shotgun never returned, & I never learned how he found out about his girlfriend cheating on him (if, in fact, she did). My ex-wife's relatives say he migrated here & is going to marry an Asian man. That's what they say. The girlfriend later married someone from a larger town, & moved there. Doña Aracelli passed on a few years back. If she's in a heaven, she's giving God hell. If she's in hell, she's giving the Devil a taste of paradise. If neither place exists, she's still here in my heart with me. I haven't slept on the street since.
Now, whenever a donkey anywhere (online or off) pees on my foot, I think to myself, "Oh. I see. Yeah. Oh. Uhhh. Atonement for my sins."
What about you?
Did you ever have a donkey pee on your foot because you let yourself be bamboozled into covering for someone else's schamschnoodling?
Did you ever cover for somebody doing something wrong?

June 20th - 23rd • REGISTER HERE • BOOK YOUR HOTEL!
These tables have been organized for our groups to connect during NN13 in the plenary sessions. This is where the opening and closing keynotes take place along with many noon-time-speaking events. Box lunches are sometimes provided and it's great to have a place reserved with familiar faces. If you're attending you're invited to start a table or sit at any of the established ones. Just let me know in the comments or send me a Kosmail. Please note: This is not assigned seating. You may sit at any of the reserved tables at any time. I plan to move around and mingle. There will be over 2500 people there so being able to find each other is nice.

Cheers & Jeers - * New Day * Dinner
TIME: 5:30 PM
LOCATION: The Brit (Britannia Arms)
173 W. Santa Clara St. (0.5 miles walking distance from Conv. Center) • Downtown San Jose
Every year since 2007, Common Sense Mainer has organized a dinner for the readers of Cheers & Jeers who attend Netroots Nation. It has grown every year. Last year we had over 100 Kossacks attend. CSM always chooses a restaurant willing to handle a large crowd WITH SEPARATE CHECKS. (!?!) Yes, I know, hard to believe but it's worked the last several years. This year CSM has negotiated with The Brit for a special menu and separate checks are secured. If you'd like to join us please leave a comment in this diary and you'll be put on the RSVP list below. This year * New Day * and SFKossacks are co-hosting. All regional groups are invited to attend in addition to the loyal C&J following that Bill and Michael have.
ORGANIZER: Send navajo a kosmail to attend or leave a comment.
The above event is followed by the official opening event featuring Howard Dean:
Wednesday, June 19th

TIME: 7:30 - 9:30 PM
LOCATION: The Tech Museum

Arrive early on Wednesday to pick up your credentials at the Convention Center which will get you into the Liquid Courage event. You can let them know you're coming on their facebook page.
TheFatLadySings is working with Eric at Netroots Nation to try to assemble a fleet of power scooters and power chairs that can be reserved and rented by those who need them at a discount. We need to assess how many people will make use of this service. Please Kosmail TheFatLadySings with your needs for NN13.
