I normally don't like to do two diaries about the same candidate or race in one day but because Congressman Ed Markey (D. MA) is fighting hard to win this race, I figured I would help out a little more. I've been receiving fundraising e-mails all day for the Markey campaign. I posted one earlier today from Senator Tammy Baldwin (D. WI) who is raising money for Markey. But I received two other fundraising emails from two other great Senators reach mar key's fundraising deadline tonight. The first one is from Senator Al Franken (D. MN):
Losing is always a bummer.
But losing a special election? In Massachusetts? For a seat previously held by an awesome Democratic champion?
That’s a special kind of bummer -- as we remember all too well from 2010, when that exact special kind of bummer nearly cost us a shot at health care reform.
So, this time? No bummers. Let’s get Ed Markey’s back.
I’m working to help Ed raise $200,000 to fight off Republican attacks in the critical last two weeks -- can you chip in $5 today?

Ed’s a good friend and a fantastic representative. He’s been a leader on everything from climate change to campaign finance reform. And he’d be exactly the kind of colleague progressives like Elizabeth Warren and myself need in the Senate.
But even if Ed weren’t the awesome, dynamic leader he is, this would be a really good time to take action.
Every right-wing special interest in the game wants this special election to go the way the last one in 2010 did. But this time, we’ll be ready for them.

Waking up the morning after we lost that special election in Massachusetts in 2010 was a real bummer. Waking up the morning after Ed Markey wins a seat in the Senate? That’ll be sweet. But we need to work together to make it happen.

Thanks,

P.S.: Losing this special election would be more than just a bummer -- it would be devastating to our progressive agenda. We need to get Ed’s back. Click here to help by contributing $5 or more toward his $200,000 goal!

The second fundraising e-mail I received today was from another great Senator, Jeff Merkley (D. OR), who is also working to help keep Markey's campaign fueled:
Here’s a scary thought: in two weeks Mitch McConnell could get another vote in the U.S. Senate to obstruct and derail our efforts to fight global climate change, rein in Wall Street, and create middle-class jobs.
It could happen. In Massachusetts, Democrat Ed Markey is a proven progressive locked in a close special election race with his Republican opponent. Bay State voters go to the polls in just two weeks.
Our progressive grassroots community must respond: Please donate $20.13 right now, and let’s ensure Massachusetts has a progressive voice in the Senate. We’re just a few hours away from the final critical fundraising deadline in this special election.

When it comes to tackling global climate change and fighting for America’s working families, Ed Markey is one of the best progressives I know.
In fact, Markey was so effective in trying to address climate change as the chair of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, that when the Republicans took control of the House, they abolished his committee!
Please join me in working to elect Ed Markey: Pitch in $20.13 right now.

We can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. The last time there was a special election for the senate in Massachusetts, Scott Brown was elected to Ted Kennedy's seat. Our progressive community needs to rally and support Ed Markey. The clock is ticking. Election Day is almost here.
Thanks,
Senator Jeff Merkley
p.s. If we’re going to finally reform the filibuster and get moving on our critical progressive priorities, we’ll need Ed Markey’s help. Please chip in $20.13 today.

Please do donate to Markey's campaign through either Franken or Merkley's links. The Special Election is Tuesday, June 25th and the latest polls are showing that the race is tightening:
http://www.masslive.com/...
A new poll released Tuesday by WBUR finds Democratic Senate candidate Edward Markey with a seven point lead over Republican candidate Gabriel Gomez.
The poll finds Markey, a U.S. Representative, beating Gomez, a private equity investor, 46 to 39 percent. The margin of Markey’s lead in the WBUR poll is identical to a Suffolk University poll released Monday.
The poll finds that women are favoring Markey by a growing margin – 20 percent, compared to 17 percent in last month’s WBUR poll. While women typically vote Democratic at a higher rate than men, the Markey campaign has also recently been pushing issues relating to abortion and contraception, which are generally of higher importance to women than to men. Among voters who said “women’s issues” were very important to them, Markey was leading by 26 points.
The poll found that Gomez has only a small edge - five points - among independent voters, not enough to counter Markey’s strength among Democrats, who outnumber Republicans three to one in Massachusetts. - The Republican, 6/11/13
Markey and Gomez will be debating again tonight in Springfield. You can get the info to watch the debate here:
