Here are some cars I frickin love:
1985 Mercedes-Benz 300d W123 Turbodiesel
I've always loved this car, the best vehicle Mercedes-Benz ever built. Known worldwide for its ability to go the distance, there are 300d's that have gone well over half a million miles. If you see one of these with 200,000 miles on it, shrug it off. That's nothing. From the vacuum system to the inline-5 engine, I just love this car to death. Had to install engine warmers on mine during the winter months, but its nothing compared to the joy of driving this strong, sturdy workhorse. Environmentalists love to convert them to run on recycled vegetable oil, and it will.
But for me, the sleek, classic European styling is the icing on the cake. Not to mention how easy it is to fix yourself. As I've gone in and through mine over the years, I can't help but love finding the signatures of various German craftsmen etched in to different places throughout the vehicle. German engineering and efficient design at its finest. When you drive one of these, take some sausage and cheese with you. Get your full German on.
1993 Porsche 911 Turbo (964) RS America
As young man, I met a girl while on liberty. She was a New England old money blue blood and had one of these. I drove it up
Route 100 in Vermont. In October. It was a 5-speed manual and boy...could that bad boy run. There were stretches for 30 min or so where I was the only car on the road...running at 130mph in 5th.
You can therefore imagine why this care will always be one of my favorites. It was an absolute wonder to drive. I wish I could find one. And if you want to run route 100, start at Killington and go north towards Duxbury. Lots of turns and hills. Go during the Autumn foliage if you want to really see something magical.
1983 Oldsmobile Regency 98 Brougham
When my pops made shop steward, he went out and got himself one of these. It was a 'you've made it' car for union guys. It was the first car I ever drove. I remember many a road trip in the smooth comfort of this GM big body classic. Smooth, heavy, and packed with V8 power...lush with velour and leather. It was like driving while sitting in a lazy boy listening to your basic 'smooth jazz' radio station. You could turn the power steering with your pinky finger and little effort.
If you can find one, drive while listening to Smoky Robinson's Cruisin. Or perhaps George Benson's Breezin.
I could go on, but I'm more interested in seeing cars you love! Post pics and tell stories.
