Secretary of State John Kerry at yesterday's Senate hearing
Following
yesterday's Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the Obama administration's request for Congressional authorization to attack Syria, the House Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to hold its own hearing. As with yesterday's hearing, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey will make the administration's case and will answer questions from committee members. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM ET and will be broadcast on C-SPAN and online at
c-span.org.
Meanwhile, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is starting markup on its draft Syria attack resolution. Committee members will be working from a draft resolution authored by the Senators Robert Mendendez and Bob Corker, the committee's chairman and ranking member.
The draft resolution gives President Obama authority to attack Syria to "degrade" Syria's chemical weapons arsenal and to deter it from future attacks. It creates a window of 60 days for the president to act, though that could be extended to 30 days, and it would prohibit the use of ground troops in carrying out its objectives. Senator John McCain has already signaled his opposition to the resolution.
You can watch the proceedings on C-SPAN2 or online at c-span.org. The markup was scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM ET.
