New Mexico is about to become the 13th state to legalize marriage equality. There were suits pending in a few counties, and the process was slowly moving along. But when Lynn Ellins, County Clerk of Doña Ana County, declared he was going to follow the attorney general's reading of the New Mexico Constitution, and begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the ball started rolling very quickly. In fact, the State Supreme Court will hear the case on October 23rd.
But there's always a catch. Six Republican State legislators are suing Mr. Ellins. He said he didn't want the County to absorb the cost of defending him, so he is asking for donations to cover the cost of his defense. The money is being collected through an Act Blue account.
The whole story, along with the ActBlue information can be found here. Please do what you can. This courageous man shouldn't have to shoulder the expense himself. Thank you.
Note: I didn't know the best time to post this, so even if you can't contribute, please rec so it will get more eyes. Thanks.
