On Friday night, a new documentary, "Mission Congo," premiered which offers compelling evidence Pat Robertson spirited away with funds donated to his Operation Blessing charity to help Rwandan refugees who had fled to the Congo and instead used them to fund a diamond mining operation. I diaried on this Friday night. Hours before it premiered, Robertson announced he was giving serious thought to suing the filmmakers. So I figured step two in the pushback would be to wring his hands before his followers on today's 700 Club.
Well, I thought wrong. Based on a search of a transcript of today's show, there was nada, zip, zero mention about the film or the allegations it raised. For those who missed it, several former Operation Blessing staffers alleged that the much-trumpeted relief effort in Congo was an elaborate facade. One former pilot claimed to have made 38 flights to deliver equipment to a mining operation hundreds of miles from the area hardest hit by the refugee crisis. It also claims that what aid did get to Congo did very little good.
Knowing what we know about Robertson, you'd think he'd waste no time denouncing this as yet another attack by those godless libruls. Hmmm--wonder if he knows that film pretty much echoes reporting done by his hometown paper, The Virginian-Pilot--reporting which led the Virginia consumer affairs office to find that Robertson had indeed made several fraudulent and misleading statements. Still, the silence today was pretty deafening.
