Kenm has a diary about Obama proposing cuts to Social Security. Subversive made a great comment:
Seniors should start mailing cans of cat food to the White House. Perhaps they could share their favorite brands and flavors with the President. Imagine what media images of millions of cans of cat food being delivered would look like.
This is a wonderful idea!
Seriously, I am very concerned about these cuts to Social Security. I don't care if it is just a .3% difference from how it is being calculated now. It will add up over time! I am 74 now. I want to live to 94! Sure, I'll probably be in a nursing home by then and that will be paid by the government. But maybe at age 84 I'll still be in my home. I am going to need every bit of Social Security.
My husband, Richard, delivered pizzas until age 78. He doesn't any more because he doesn't walk very well. He uses a cane. I work part-time at a Hallmark store. I don't mind. It is okay. But we still need Social Security. Is that so wrong??
I am going to send a can of cat food to President Obama. And to my Senators, Klobuchar and Franken. I'll send separate in my husband's name. Let's face it, I've been sending our Christmas cards for 50 years. He is not going to send this cat food.
Can you join me on this? I know I probably won't resort to eating cat food but I'll probably eat more noodles and butter. And I love them but it isn't that healthy.
7:40 AM PT: Just so we are clear, I like President Obama. I voted for him twice. I knocked on doors for him in 2008. I like many of his policies. I just don't want him to cut Social Security and Medicare. One of the reasons I vote for Democrats is to protect these programs.
9:03 AM PT: If you do not believe sending cat food is appropriate but still believe President Obama should not cut Social Security, please write, email or call the White House to let them know. I saw a petition posted on another diary about saying "no" to cuts. This is a good option as well.
I actually didn't want to stir up controversy. I just wanted attention to the issue and maybe controversy does create attention. Of course, my friends don't think there should be cuts to Social Security so I don't really see it as being very controversial. But I can see that it is.
Dennis Kucinich says seniors will be chained to poverty.
Chained to poverty.
