When you displace 800,000 people from their work, tell them with no notice they are furloughed, unemployed, no longer getting a paycheck, not going to be compensated for the loss, going to have to go home and explain to their families why they will be going hungry for a while, losing their home, unable to afford to live, you take the risk that they are going to see your replacement as an urgent necessity.
Add to that all the business affected by shutting down, national parks in red states, and with that shutdown the economy of towns, counties and the safe gerrymandered districts that voted the tea party into office. The loss of tourism revenues. Do it going into winter when people who can't afford heat will freeze. Add to that the shutdown of 31 some odd federal agencies that like NASA employ communities.
Republicans couldn't have come up with a more convincing argument, a better reason why they are a luxury we can no longer afford. When it comes to selling that fairly obvious conclusion there is no replacement for displacement.
Shutting down the government whose services sustain us all isn't an idea that occurs to people looking to the future, its an end of days, burn the bridges to keep out the zombie apocalypse solution. Most of us have not gotten to where we already consider everybody else but us expendable.
For Republicans getting rid of 99% of what they view as other peoples entitlements is the name of the game. That level of greed is just hard for most of us to appreciate. Democrats tend to see pitching in and sharing whatever we have as the essence of being a community. Its the sort odf thinking that comes with a union label.
We will hear a lot about the most extraordinary idiocies. The furloughed air traffic inspectors whose work prevents plane crashes, the kids with cancer who are going to be denied life saving treatments at exactly the time they need them most, the white water rafters who waited for 15 years to get permits to run a very special stretch of river only to lose their opportunity and place in line because the park the river runs through was shut down. Republicans don't care. They don't want us to have the luxury to care either.
What we all will be feeling is the senselessness of a nation of 300 million people letting 40 ego driven maniacs drive our decision making process into one manufactured crisis after another. Republicans can feel the "birds of a feather flock together" , "tarred with the same brush" destruction of their brand. They know their lies about Obama care, Obama, climate change, jobs and the economy, are being exposed like a wardrobe malfunction, that their spokespeople have lost the ability to make their pitch heard through the ever more urgent desire to restore some sanity.
We started out the Obama administration hoping we were all focused on jobs and the economy; what Republicans were focused on was their getting bigger bonuses and compensation for sending more jobs overseas and racing for the bottom. The idea was to level the playing field for American workers with Chinese slave labor. Their focus was to cut costs, lower taxes on the increased profits, remove environmental, safety, banking and other regulations and make a few people obscenely wealthy at the expense of most of the rest of us.
The original idea was obstruction. to prevent any of the legislation passed in the first two years from taking effect and then blame the failure on Obama and Democratic policies. So far Obama has managed not to be obstructed deflecting the Tea Party attempts at austerity. Every time he has defended not making cuts to social programs, human and civil rights, they have held the economy hostage.
Even as we approach the end of our forever wars, improve our economy, bring Obamacare to 50 Million people who never had healthcare before, and advance the equality of all of our citizens they have done everything in their power to sabotage him by voter suppression, waging a war of women, minorities, unions all the things that historically have been the essence of America
The economy is recovering so they want to stop that. People are getting healthcare so they want to stop that its time that we call them into our office tell them that things just aren't working out and begin looking at replacements.
