I just had to put this up. I have seen a number of comments like this at RedState and other places. This particular comment (a response to a commenter supporting Harry Reid's actions) comes from today's Dana Milbank column on the filibuster:
You seem to think elections mean "winner take all". This is not a democracy where majority rules, this is a Republic where minorities still have a say.
So, it's important that a majority not steamroll the minority? Is that how the GOP has been running things in the Texas legislature?
The Texas GOP most certainly HAS been shutting down the view of the minority Democrats at every turn. Whether it's slashing school funding, gerry-rigging electoral maps, suppressing voting rights, or enacting TRAP laws to prevent women from exercising their Constitutional rights - the GOP in Texas has not given the first damn about giving the minority a say in anything.
Hence Wendy Davis was forced to filibuster the Texas Taliban's latest attack on women's rights and women's healthcare. Not only did the Republican-dominated legislature run roughshod over the Democratic minority on this issue, they spit in the faces of a huge number of Texas women protesting the bill. The fact that they searched women's purses and confiscated their tampons shows the GOP's extreme hated of and contempt for any form of dissent.
Does the minority viewpoint "have a say" in Texas? No. The same can be said about the rights of LGBT individuals across the country. Are Republicans interested in a "Republic where minorities" - like LGBT? - "still have a say?" No. They are interested in saying "my way or the highway." Because Jesus. Now that's democracy in action!
And I have never seen any conservative, at RedState or anywhere else, complain about "winner take all" in those contexts. Therefore hypocrites like these should not expect a lot of sympathy for their point of view now.
