I am on mobile and this just happened. If I need edits on this diary, I will process them a bit later today. All done.
We have a 20 something in our life who is just trying to get established. Jobs have been hard to find and keep and he needs some help along the way.
Not an hour ago, we were having a conversation about the ACA and the Oregon medicaid expansion which he very likely qualifies for. We were clearing the air on misinformation and I had convinced him to make his calls and get after some insurance, because things can happen.
I leave to run some errands, and I get a call from my wife who took him to the ER just now.
Turns out he left the house and got hit by some woman who said she just could not stay or help him to the doctors after running him over. His hip and leg hurt, fingernail ripped off, cuts in various places and it appears he hit his head because he is confused.
What a bitch! I hope he can remember enough to tell the authorities about the hit and run he just experienced.
He isn't covered now. That ER visit is going to change his just starting life for the worse and all this misinformation and negative obstruction is not just politics. People have lives and futures on the line here.
I am really angry right now! I think he will be OK, but he won't be financially. That apartment is a lot farther off now, more nights crashing on couches, doing favors and just healing. Life is hard enough for people and we don't need to make it harder for them.
Every single signup matters people. Every conversation to push back on selfish bull shit matters too. Stand up for this law. Do your part and let us all push the selfish lies back into the dark where they belong.
Fuck the asses trying to make us fail. They don't care about anybody but themselves. The rest of us are out there trying to make this world a bit better and we deserve to win.
We deserve this because life just happens and when it does we all need each other to get through.
UPDATE: 5:30PM He has no major breaks in his neck and major limbs. However, they are not sure about his head and face. The local medical professionals transferred him to a Portland hospital for a night in the ER there and tests. We think he will just need to heal, but we really won't know until tomorrow. Thanks for the well wishes everyone.
The local police have interviewed him in hopes of catching the hit 'n run woman who left him on the side of the road to walk back to our place hardly able to speak. Shit. Some people are really crappy.
As mentioned in the comments, we may not win. Our best case scenario is for all of us to unify around the cause, push back on failure advocates and make this stick, then make it better, then make it awesome!
9:36 PM PT: He was just released. Doctors said he was very lucky to be walking out of the building after being hit the way he was at 30 MPH.
I picked him up and will get things sorted out for the days of rest coming up.
Thanks for the warm thoughts everybody. The car has been identified as one frequently seen in the neighborhood. A few of his friends are going to canvas the blocks near the incident.
Turns out the woman was either high, stoned, drunk, or all of the above. Once he got the right care, he was able to tell us and the police quite a bit more including a great physical description. Should be some interesting happenings tomorrow.
Mon Nov 25, 2013 at 8:07 PM PT: My son canvassed the neighborhood, found the car and woman and took a photo.
So we are able to close the loop with the authorities. Now, to find that guy who saw the whole thing and find out what the woman was on, or doing when she botched it so badly to make a hit and run.
The kid is doing well. Stuff hurts, but he's largely OK and just needs healing. Great result. Could have been MUCH worse.
