If you think the Duck Dynasty controversy was some fun, in about two minutes the internet might crash with the homophobic response to the news that a gay wedding is going to be performed on one of the floats in the Rose Parade.
I received this broadcast email from a conservative friend this morning:
I am OLD! I now am a relic from the past. Heard something today that made me realize although I may be “in the numerical majority” my world is “in the minority.” Just heard that there will be afloat in the Rose Parade by the AIDS Foundation upon which will be “married” a male homosexual couple. As someone who was once actually on a float in the parade and who has gone to more Rose Parades than anyone I know, I am totally saddened! I Googled “Gay float in Rose Parade” (try it) and read all about what I’d heard on the radio. Although my hero Vin Scully is the Grand Marshall this year I will possibly watch him and then turn OFF (“boycott”) my beloved parade. Such an “in your face” political/social statement has no place there!!! Note that gay marriage is “still” illegal in 30 states. Next year will they allow a float from Planned Parenthood with a counsellor on top talking a young girl into having an abortion? Or a float pushing for nation-wide legalization of marijuana? Floats should not alienate gays, nor should they alienate straights……..floats should bring joy to all. That’s the purpose of the parade. It should not be used to push some agenda of Sandra Fluke, or Marco Rubio, or Al Sharpton, or even Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson. For the Rose Parade to be used for advancement of GLAD or LGBT or any other such dividing and debated agenda is tragic…..
I might tend to agree with him that this is provocative and unnecessarily divisive, except that it's not happening spontaneously in a vacuum, but rather in response to California gays suffering the relatively recent indignity of having their civil rights put to a vote.
Payback is a bitch.
