By now you may have heard that Rep. Ken Calvert, the original author of the E-Verify employment verification system who represents California's 42nd Congressional District, has just been appointed by the House GOP to be the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona) on Wednesday was named chairman of a House Appropriations subcommittee, boosting California’s clout in Congress even if his position comes in an era of belt-tightening.
In wielding the gavel of the Interior and Environment subcommittee, Calvert will oversee the budgets of the Environmental Protection Agency, national parks, forests and wildlife refuges, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other agencies.
He takes over the panel at a time when lawmakers can no longer earmark funds for their pet projects and his GOP colleagues have pushed hard to reduce Washington’s red ink.
In addition, the Press-Enterprise reported that the new post for Congressman Calvert is a boon for him. A Claremont McKenna College professor of politics even pointed out there was a positive thing in having Calvert as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee on the Environment and Interior.

Calvert’s Nov. 13 appointment is “all positive,” said Jack Pitney, a professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College.
“It’s a sign that he’s a consequential member, that he can get things done, that he’s working on issues that are important to (his) district,” Pitney said. “I don’t see much downside to it.”
However, one of the Democratic Candidates running in the CA-42 race in 2014, Tim Sheridan, responded to the Press Enterprise article ripping Congressman Ken Calvert and his new Chairmanship role:

New Subcommittee Appointment for Calvert Not Good for the Environment
With respect to your article “CONGRESS: New post a boon for Calvert”, the appointment of Representative Ken Calvert as head of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies may well be a boon for Mr. Calvert, but not good for Americans or the environment.
Mr. Calvert has shown such little regard for environmental issues that in 2012 he earned an abysmal 3% score from the highly respected League of Conservation Voters. For example, Mr. Calvert supported legislation (H.R. 4480) intended to change the definition of air quality from the current standard which gauges the potential effect on human health to a standard which considers the “cost to industry.” He also voted for legislation (H.R. 3409) that would have gutted the Clean Water Act. Finally, he opposed fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for cars.
Mr. Calvert's record on the environment renders his appointment as head of any environmental subcommittee a problem – not a boon. We need a Representative in Congress who supports both the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts so that Americans in the future can live in a safe environment. Mr. Calvert is not that Representative.
