April Fools! I guess someone forgot to post the Abbreviated Pundit Roundup this morning, so here is my version for those of us who consider APR our morning wake up call!
I'm at work, so this will be brief and also considered an open thread.
Because it's April Fool's Day, we'll start with a column from our favorite, Jennifer Rubin, of WaPo:
How did the right lose on gay marriage?
1. They never explained how same-sex marriage “harms” heterosexual marriage...
5. They ignored the plight of heterosexual marriage (soaring divorce rate, rise in single-person households), which made their defense of “traditional” marriage seem insincere...
6. As more gay and lesbian Americans came out to friends, family and co-workers, the anti-gay-marriage voices were handicapped; they argued against an issue in the abstract while gay-marriage proponents could argue that Mike and Sam down the street or Sue and Ann at the office shouldn’t be denied the right to marry...
How about 15 people who don't know the difference between Cesar Chavez and Hugo Chavez?
15 People Who Think Google Is Honoring Hugo Chávez
The GOP Apology Tour is just getting warmed up:
The Post’s Aaron Blake and Juliet Eilperin got to the heart of the GOP’s attitude problem when they wrote about “Don Young and the GOP’s Archie Bunker problem.” Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), 79, used a racial slur (“wet backs,” to be specific) to describe the Hispanic migrant workers his father hired to pick tomatoes on their California ranch when he was a kid. I would add Dr. Ben Carson to the mix. The Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and new GOP darling waxed offensive on Fox News last week when he linked gays to the pedophiles of the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) and “people who believe in bestiality.”
And one of my favorite pieces from this weekend, the Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky, on the coming breakup between Republicans and evangelical Christians:
What are evangelical conservatives going to do? I ask the question not with any sympathy, but with a mountain of schadenfreudian glee—I am profoundly reassured about my country’s direction every time I hear Tony Perkins bemoan it. But however it’s asked, it’s a question that’s growing more and more urgent. Mike Huckabee says that if the GOP embraces same-sex marriage, “evangelicals will take a walk.” Others pooh-pooh this on the usual grounds that they’ve got nowhere else to go. But they do: back to private life. And it’s my bet that in, say, eight or 12 years’ time, that’s where a lot of evangelicals will be. Having gotten into politics to rescue America from the sinners and fornicators, I reckon a critical mass will decide by 2024 that it was fun while it lasted, but that the fight is hopeless.

Happy April Fool's Day, don't take anything you read too seriously...
