"They won't try us. They won't let us live in peace, and they won't let us die in peace." Fayiz al-Kandari
Fayiz al-Kandari is one of the 100 men detained at Guantanamo on hunger strike, one of the 86 cleared for release held without charge.
The number of detainees is unclear, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has no official published list of detainees.
In April 2013 Alfred Mauricio de Zayas, scholar and expert on the topic, professor at Geneva School of Diplomacy was asked how many.
He recalled that now there are 166 detainees in Guantanamo, but in 2002-2003 there were 700 people from 44 nationalities, including children aged 12, 14 and 16 years, which seriously violates Article 24 of the covenant of civil and political rights (United Nations 1966 International Covenant).
The use of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base for incarceration is illegal.
The 1903 treaty, modified 1934, stipulates that Cuba retains the sovereignty over that territory and that the base can only be used with naval purposes; however, the United States has made unauthorized use of it.
Guantanamo, a Frontal Attack against International Law
The timeline for the hunger strike.
Republicans blocked the release of funds to end the illegal detention camp.
This year Republicans inserted language in the bill that funded the federal government for the balance of the year that hat prohibits any money for the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States or its territories. It also bars spending to overhaul any U.S. facility in the U.S. to house detainees.
Should Republicans continue blocking Obama from closing Guantanamo?
No one has been assigned to close the facility.
