Update 4 A tornado warning has been issued for the exurbs north of Atlanta. The NWS has observed strong rotation in a large storm moving southeast towards Atlanta.
Update 3 A severe thunderstorm with some rotation is moving towards Atlanta
Update 2 The squall line has passed Raleigh and Charlotte & is heading south & east.

* AT 450 PM EDT...DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH A HISTORY OF PRODUCING PING PONG BALL SIZE HAIL...AND DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM DAVIDSON TO STANLEY TO KINGS MOUNTAIN...AND MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 35 MPH.
* SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT LOCATIONS NEAR...

A strong cold front is approaching an extremely hot, humid unstable air mass over central and eastern Virginia and North Carolina, prompting the Weather Service to post a rare Particularly Dangerous Situation Alert.
Very strong straight line winds are knocking down trees and power lines right now as the intense storms come down the slope of the Appalachians. There are dozens of recent damage reports already. The storms are likely to intensify as they hit the superheated air over the coastal plain. This is an extremely dangerous situation.
SPC put the eastern NC and VA area in a "moderate" warning with 45% or greater chance of damaging 60mph or greater winds.
There are well over 100 wind reports already today.
