The guy who
couldn't manage to pass a farm bill out of the Republican House
says President Obama is so bad that under his administration, we couldn't even have built Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, or even our interstate highway system:
Under the Obama administration, however, it’s become harder than ever to build in this country. Red tape, an outdated tax code, and shortsighted policies are driving up the cost of everything, stifling innovation, and sending jobs and opportunities to competitors like China. Politicians and bureaucrats bet taxpayer money on pet projects like Solyndra while blocking private initiatives like the Keystone pipeline. Meanwhile, the Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, or even our highway system would be almost impossible to build in today’s regulatory environment.
Sure, it's all Obama's fault that American can't make the investments necessary to build magnificent public projects. The fact that congressional Republicans are controlled by tea party extremists who are obsessed with austerity has nothing to do with it.
If Boehner were actually interested in helping lead the country back to a place where we could build public works projects on that scale, it would be thrilling. But instead of thinking big, all he's really doing is trying to get approval for the fossil fuel industry to build a pipeline to ship their products to customers.
Sure, if Boehner's crew ran the show, the Keystone Pipeline would get built. Heck, there wouldn't be a single damn thing the fossil fuel industry wouldn't be able to do. But we still wouldn't be able to build the Golden Gate, or anything like it. These guys can't even raise the debt limit without creating a major governing crisis. You'd have to be nuts to think they could do something like build the Hoover Dam.
