One of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings was in possession of right-wing American literature in the run-up to the attack, BBC Panorama has learnt.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev subscribed to publications espousing white supremacy and government conspiracy theories.
Someone at his mosque described him as a "Muslim of convenience". He was angry young man and he went looking for a cause. While it is possible that his Chechen family helped steer him into radical Islam, it appears Tamerlan was a terrorist waiting to happen.
The brothers' friends told us Tamerlan turned against the country and became passionate about Islam after becoming frustrated when his boxing career faltered because he did not have American citizenship.
I didn't know American citizenship was helpful for boxing; given the number of black and brown fighters I wouldn't think racism would be much of a problem but I'm a white suburban male so I might be surprised.
Oh, and what do White Supremacists and radical Islam have in common? First thing that comes to my mind is anti-Semitic hatred - lots of it. Going deeper you have the common sales technique that your failures aren't your fault but "their" fault, with different groups taking the role of "them" depending on who is trying to exploit the anger.
I wonder how much play this will get on Fox News. My guess is not too much, as "Muslim = killer" is a theme they like, but "Right-wing white supremacist=killer" is one they are a little less comfortable with.
There are a lot of angry people, especially young men, in the world. I think there always have been. And there have always been people who wanted to exploit that anger for their own ends. And Tamerlane Tsarnaev was presented with a smorgasbord of choices of exploiters before he finally settled (it appears) on a particular variant of Islam.
The lesson, perhaps, is not to silence this group of exploiters or that one, but to have fewer desperate angry people ready to be exploited. A society that was a little kinder and less competitive might go a long way toward that goal, but such a society would make both Republican Jesus and His Virgin Mother Ayn Rand weep plentiful tears.
