As some of you may know, I've been working at my school district's print shop since the end of June, and as this internship comes to a close, I've really come to respect the people who keep the district running. Those people who say teachers have it easy have no damned idea what they're talking about, especially when it comes to the preparation involved over the summer and just after the school year begins, and that goes double for special needs teachers, who are more overwhelmed than most people will ever realize.
Let me put it simply: Education is a public good. Granted, it doesn't always have to be 'book learning', but it still serves a purpose that far too many in this country have forgotten. I suppose we could thank our lawmakers (And those who elect and buy them) for that one, making life ever harder for the teacher, who nowadays are treated like free babysitters by parents who are worked to death for starvation wages just to make ends meet.
With that being said, I'm about to become unemployed, yet again. While I'm a little sad and anxious, I can rest easy knowing that I've got a few people who will keep their eyes out if an opening should turn up. You couldn't ask for a better group to work with.
I suppose I should be feeling worse, but I've been unemployed for most of my adult life. You could say I've come to terms with it, I guess, being that having a disability in the south makes you a target for this sort of thing, having to work a thousand times harder just to get to the bottom of the ladder.
Perhaps now though, it's not so far away.
See you around,
Homer
