We can do this. The positive news about solar energy is coming fast and furious. Stephen Lacey
writing at Green Tech/solar gives us the uplifting stats on new solar installations in U.S.:
A lot happens in America every four minutes. During that short time period, 30 babies are born, 4,080 McDonald's Big Macs are consumed, and 48,000 tons of CO2 are emitted.
And as it turns out, the U.S. is now installing one solar photovoltaic (PV) system every four minutes as well. If market growth continues at its current pace, the American solar industry could be installing a system every minute and twenty seconds by 2016
And corporate America is also
getting into the act and you know that when that happens it's because they see it as influencing their bottom line.
But the most impressive statistics about solar power involve its abundant supply and stunning potential. According to one estimate (pdf), the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth's surface in one and half hours exceeds the entire world energy consumption in the year 2001.
These statistics are impressive but of course there is much more to be done. Check out the amount of Big Macs sold every four minutes. With our knowledge that livestock production is a major contributor to climate change (pdf); reducing/eliminating our consumption of meat is another way we can all contribute to mitigating the worst effects of climate change.
