This is the claim made be one CPAC attendee to Raw Story that i find just fantastically naive.
After a discussion where Dwayne Carson, who used to work for former North Carolina Congressman Robin Hayes, and now with former Congressmen J.C. Watts on Insight, where he argues that Dodd-Frank Bill is bad for minorities because it reigns in the abusive interest rates charged by pay-day lenders, Carson goes on to argue that Section 2 of the Civil Rights Act is completely unnecessary - cuz - Freedom.
http://www.rawstory.com/...
OK, what about Title II of the Civil Rights Act? Should businesses be allowed to discriminate in the name of freedom? “They should be able to decide what or who they want,” said Carson. “If they don’t hire somebody because of their race, color, or creed, that organization will probably go out of business based on word of mouth alone.” What about if a business won’t serve people because of their race? “If they don’t serve people on that basis, some other organization is going to benefit from that. That’s the beauty of the free market. There’ll be another store or restaurant down the street that’ll say, ‘I will serve them. I Want their business.’ And the business that isn’t serving them will lose out.”
So my question back to Dwayne is simply this: When exactly the FUCK has that actually happened?
We live in a world where Conservative organizations are arguing, and trying to push through legislature, that says they have the Right to Discriminate Against Gays - because Jesus and Romans - and I really don't see them being all that timid about it, horribly worried that they're going to "lose business" to other companies for doing exactly that.
Why doesn't the "Free Market" better inform their choices so they don't think doing such a thing is so great an idea?
This is besides the point that Jesus never said anything about gays or gay marriage, plus John - who wrote Romans and Corinthians - in strict translations wasn't talking about gays or homosexuals but instead was talking about men who commit adultery, rape, prostitution and pedophilia.
Although the word [used by John] in English Bibles is interpreted as referring to homosexuals, we can be fairly certain that this is not the meaning that Paul wanted to convey. If he had, he would have used the word "paiderasste." That was the standard Greek term at the time for sexual activity between males. We can conclude that he probably meant something different than people who engaged in male-male adult sexual behavior.
So despite the fact that their response when dealing with consensual adult commitment between is to claim they have a
religious right not to serve these customers - I really don't see them
quaking in fear that they'll lose all their business to competitors for taking this stance. As a matter of fact the apparent many people who agree with the distorted stance of people like Phil Robertson were not exactly timid about their
endorsement of his statements, and the condemnation of A&E for suspending him.
Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked radio host Mike Slater if it was right for A&E to get its “ruffles up” and suspend Robertson...
“He was asked, what in your mind is a sin?” Slater noted. “It’s the bizarre hypocrisy from [LGBT rights group] GLAAD in particular. They want tolerance for their sexuality, but they are not willing to be tolerant of, in this case, Phil’s Christianity.”
Or...
“Free speech is endangered species; those ‘intolerants’ hatin’ & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all,” Palin tweeted.
And...
Another Fox News host, Sean Hannity, complained the disciplinary actions against Robertson established a “slippery slope,” ...
“Phil Robertson is a new American hero,He said exactly what the great majority of Americans believe. Phil Robertson is right. It’s a simple matter of plumbing. Easy to figure out what is supposed to go where. And where not.”
Also, from Baby Palin-Spice...
Everyone needs to leave Phil Robertson alone for expressing his beliefs. I think it’s so hypocritical how the LGBT community expects every single flippen person to agree with their life style. This flies in the face of what makes America great – people can have their own beliefs and own opinions and their own ways of life.
Everyone needs to treat others like God would, with love.
It goes both ways.
So apparently Robertson could say that gay people were going to hell, and that black people
were better off and happier under Jim Crow, and after the right wing decries that
his rights are being limited and his family threatens to quit the highly rated A&E show, how exactly did the Free Market "Correct" what he said?
Yeah...
Here's another example from Mike Huckabee, also at CPAC, who made this argument.
“If this nation forgets our God, then God will have every right to forget us,” he said.
Yes, because Huckabee-God is apparently a vicious, vindictive, narcissistic, toddler.
And also...
“Religious liberty should be unimpeded in this nation,” he said.
Because apparently the Liberty of the Non-Religious, of
differently Religious really doesn't matter does it?
Ok, so let me move on to race. When and where exactly has anything like this caused the Tea Party to consider they might be helping their political opposition with signs like these?
How exactly has the market of free ideas, successfully opposed this? What we've heard instead is a steady stream of denial and deflection. Have other members of the Tea Party, afraid that such things might
damage the integrity of thier brand stepped forward to distance themselves from and condemn this kind of thing?
Frak No!
Instead they've denied it even happened. Or that is was highly rare so it didn't matter. They've claimed that people with such signs or arguments were Democrat Plants who were just their to make them look bad. When the NAACP Complained about them, their supporters like Andrew Brietbart counter attacked by producing a deceptively edited video to smear the NAACP and Shirley Sherrod with being the "Real" Racists, despite - like - facts.
And just to be fair and use some examples that involves businesses as opposed to other organizations, it wasn't until she admitted it in a deposition not only that she'd repeated lused the N-word, but also racially discriminated in her hiring and employment practices that Paula Deen's business began to falter after how many decades.
So she lost her TV Show, but did she lose her business? Nope. She's even been back on TV recently.
Twenty years ago when Denny's was caught repeatedly discriminating against African-American customers - was there a massive boycott and walkout that damaged their business beyond repair?
http://lubbockonline.com/...
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A decade ago, the restaurant chain Denny's was nearly synonymous with racism.
Some of the restaurants were accused of making blacks prepay, not serving them as quickly as whites were served and sometimes not serving blacks at all.
In one case, black Secret Service agents assigned to protect the president said they sat unserved until the whites around them had finished eating.
What resulted was a class-action lawsuit that was settled for $54 million in 1994 and pushed Denny's to make an amazing transformation.
Nope.
And this year when a Oklahoma Restaurant Owner was interviewed about his bigoted business practices - it's not exactly like he was shy about it.

[Disabled Former Customer] Matt Gard claims that the owner of Gary’s Chicaros restaurant, Gary James, banned him from the restaurant because of his wheelchair. James, however, says otherwise: “He created an issue. You only have one time here. You create an issue, you’re out forever.”
...
James doesn’t deny that he thinks some people shouldn’t patronize his restaurant. “Well if you work, you own a business, pay your taxes, you’re more than welcome here,” he told KFOR. “If you’re on welfare, stay at home and spend my money, there. I don’t deal with these people walking down the street with no jobs on welfare.”
Gard also claims that James has routinely turned away customers for decades. “He doesn’t like certain people of race, color, ethnicity,” Gard said of James.
James told KFOR that he’s owned Gary’s Chicaros for 44 years, so he “think[s] I can spot a freak or a f*ggot.”
The restaurant’s official t-shirt ["Where Great Whites Gather"] makes it clear that a “f*ggot” isn’t welcome in James’s establishment. It features that word, the N-word ["Nigger Free Zone"] , and threatens violence against Muslims, Democrats, and members of many minority groups.
After 44 years with these practices, this guy hasn't faced the "Wrath of the Free Market" yet?
What in the world would make someone like Dwayne think that's finally going to happen anytime soon? Maybe in another 40 years it'll finally happen?
Vyan
3:07 PM PT: H/T to the comments which mention other examples such as Hooby Lobby and Chik-Fil-A, as well as point out that hundreds of negative Yelp reviews criticizing Gary's Chicaro's have been systematically scrubbed, and that in a follow up interview James claims to have been "misquoted" (Even his t-shirts which say "Nigger Free Zone!"?) and that his business has in fact, increased by 25%!
So there's that too.
