500,000 California signups projected by April 15! Posted by kos! 7 million? Will be much larger than that
That gives us a good chance to reach 8 million nationally in the extension period. In one of brainwrap's posts, he estimates that we will get to 8.3 million after the extensions.
Update: Oh, and Rachel! in a segment called Pocket Science:
Turns out it is not 7.1 million, it is 10 million.
with the new report on Medicaid. More below from her, adding to what brainwrap said about it.
With all of the hullabaloo over finishing the first part of Open Enrollment with 7.1 million signups on the Exchanges, brainwrap has not been able to keep up with everything we could wish at ACA Signups for several days. For example, the available numbers have edged up from 7.08 million projected for midnight on March 31 to 7.12 million today, and we have a new version of the graph and spreadsheet with the numbers that make up that new total. The real total for QHPs (Qualified Health Plans), with the estimated 9 million off-Exchange signups, is 16 million QHPs, and the real total total including Medicaid, sub-26ers, and the rest is probably about 26 million, of which 6.8 million unconfirmed off-exchange QHPs are omitted from the graph because brainwrap is scrupulous about using only confirmed numbers wherever possible. So the graph only shows 19 million in all.
Yes, we know it's confusing.
There will be updates, as I have indicated in the title. We start at 0 and proceed onward. Please check back later for more news.
JoanMar has started a new group here on dKos: Obamacare Saves Lives. I was delighted, and joined right up. I have become a BlogAdmin, which means that I can publish these Diaries directly to the group. I have started to republish other health care Diaries there. If you Diary on health care, please message JoanMar about joining, and let us know in these Diaries when you get in and what you plan to add to the group.
There are several ACA milestones coming up.
- Final totals up to the original deadline, March 31
- Periodic reports from states on applications completed in their extension periods
- Final totals up to the extensions that end on April 15
- Final final totals after all extensions end in May
- Reports of off-exchange signups with private insurers in quarterly financial reports and elsewhere
- Republican heads finish exploding as the ACA becomes accepted and normal
OK, that last item is a joke, of course. Republican heads will never finish exploding.

President Obama's "7M on Medicaid Thanks to the ACA" Now True!! (UPDATE x2)
I don't usually write this all out, but given the interest in the site these days, I figured I would give a play-by-play of the process of breaking down the CMS reports by state, using the February CMS report just released an hour or so ago.
April 4
The February CMS Report is out! The February CMS Report is out!
Key findings from the Medicaid report:
- 3 million additional individuals enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP through the end of February 2014 compared to enrollment before the Health Insurance Marketplace opened on October 1, 2013.
- Among states that adopted the Medicaid coverage expansion and whose expansions were in effect in February, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by 8.3 percent compared to the months prior to Marketplace open enrollment period.
- States that have not expanded Medicaid coverage reported an increase in Medicaid enrollment of 1.6 percent over the same period.
- Eligibility determinations also continued to grow: between October 2013 and February 2014, 11.7 million people were determined eligible for Medicaid and CHIP by State agencies, up from 8.9 million reported last month for the October – January period.

A few days ago Rachel Maddow, in a piece on the President's Rose Garden announcement of the 7.1 million signups, added a roundup of clips from Democratic ads hitting Republicans for wanting to take away health care from those who now have it. The embed code they gave me does not embed, so you have to click on ‘Armageddon’ not brought by Obamacare success and then wait through the ad before you can navigate. But you can see Joe "Cheshire Cat" Biden early on. The ad clips start at 13:19 in the video, after the speech.
TPM: Paul Ryan: We Can Totally Still Repeal Obamacare
House Budget Chair Paul Ryan (R-WI) says Republicans can still repeal Obamacare.
He was asked on Bloomberg TV's "Political Capital With Al Hunt" about the impracticality of fully repealing Obamacare now that more than 7 million people have signed up on the insurance marketplaces, and more are benefiting from other provisions.
"I'd question the premise of that entire argument. No, I don't know that [we can't repeal it]," Ryan said in the interview, which is set to air Friday night. "So this whole thing that, oh, we have 7.1 million people, which, by the way, we won't even get into the legitimacy of that statistic. So we have -- let's just take it for argument. Seven million people on Obamacare; there's no way you can change it. It's just going to have to learn to live with it. I don't buy that for a second."
Ryan, asked if the next president will repeal Obamacare, said he doesn't think the law "can last" and posited that "the architecture of this law is so fundamentally flawed that I think it's going to collapse under its own weight."
WaPo:
House votes to repeal Obamacare work rule
The bill approved Thursday would change the law's definition of full-time work from 30 hours a week back to 40 hours a week…
All voting Republicans were joined by 18 Democrats, most of whom have voted repeatedly in recent months to approve GOP-backed measures that would repeal all or parts of the health law. The group includes Democrats most at risk of losing reelection this year, including Reps. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.), Ami Bera (D-Calif.), Patrick Murphy (D-Fla.) and Nick Rahall (D-W. Va.).
But in a sign that at least some nervous Democrats may now be more willing to defend the law, the number of Democratic votes in support was less than the almost-four dozen who have voted with Republicans in recent months on other bills that would strip apart the law.
This suggests that 30 wavering Democrats have seen the light on this question. We have to explain to the other 18 how to run against repealing popular features of the Affordable Care Act that Republicans want to cancel, and in favor of the millions now covered whom Republicans want to dump back in the old unregulated insurance market without any of the protections of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. "Obamacare" still functions too much as a Dog Whistle to embrace the name in reddish districts.
