Did everyone see the blood moon -- the lunar eclipse -- on Monday night/Tuesday morning? Or did you at least see pictures on the internet?
To commemorate the eclipse I thought I'd post some songs about the moon.
For a while, I was occasionally posting music videos on DKos, but then my computer crashed. A friend gave me an old computer she wasn't using, but it was too old and too slow for YouTube videos (it would pause to load more of the video, which utterly ruins the music). Then, recently a local college got rid of their older computers. I scored a decent computer for $75! And it's fast and it can handle YouTube.
So... in honor of the blood moon of Monday night... here are some of my favorite songs about the moon:
Mr. Moonshine
...by Fat Mattress.
A psychedelic-sounding song by a band you've probably never heard of. But the band was started by the guitarist Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix's bass player). Other people in the band played with Jethro Tull and Engelbert Humperdinck before or after they were in Fat Mattress.
Mr. Moonlight
...by the Beatles.
You've probably heard of them; they were more famous than Fat Mattress. A love song, or a prayer to the moon for a girlfriend. I really like this song. Good harmonies, too.
Bad Moon Rising
...by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
This song has a mondegreen -- I'm not gonna explain "mondegreen" so you'll have to google it. But here's a hint: people heard the words "there's a bad moon on the rise" and thought it was "there's a bathroom on the right."
There's a Moon in the Sky (Called The Moon)
...by the B-52s.
I love the B-52s and I love this song, but what I love the most is the title. It uses the indefinite article (a moon) and the definite article (the moon). There's a moon in the sky called the moon. It tickles me to death because it's so brilliant (in a linguistic way).
Also, it just struck me as I was listening to the song, the lead singer (who was gay and who died of AIDS) says, "If you're in outer space, don't feel out of place. Because there are others like you." Wow. I never noticed that before.
We Like Tha Moon!
...by somebody (I'm not sure who).
I think a pizza place used this in their ads. And it's just fucking weird.
Blue Moon of Kentucky
...by Patsy Cline.
Elvis (and many others) did a version of this, too.
The Killing Moon
...by Echo and the Bunnymen.
I like this song a lot. It has an orchestral sound.
Kentucky Hills of Tennessee
...by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.
I have to give you the lyrics (the Kentucky hills of Tennesee with an Alabama moon? It reminds me of, "It rained so hard the day I left, the weather it was dry.")
CHORUS: Take me back to those old Kentucky hills of Tennessee,
Where the mockin'bird is singin' high up in the laurel tree.
Let the Alabama moon shine her light on me,
Way back in those old Kentucky hills of Tennessee.
My Daddy was a rounder. he wore a rounder's hat and coat.
He used to strum a banjo, though he couldn't play a note.
My Momma used to tell me, with a smile upon her face,
"If you want second helpin's, son, you'll have to say more grace." CHORUS
It was just a year ago, I took out on the bum,
With only 14 dollars, a suitcase and a gun,
But now I am a rich man, and there's one thing that I know:
The place that I long most to be is a place where I can't go. CHORUS
Now if you ever leave your home, and loved ones far behind,
Someday you'll open up your eyes and see that you were blind,
'Cause if there is a heaven, I know where it will be:
Way back in those old Kentucky hills of Tennessee. CHORUS
So that's it. Anyone else got favorite songs about the moon? Moon River? Fly Me to the Moon? Beer Cans on the Moon?
