A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What's your favorite vacation song?
I know that it's not exactly vacation time yet, but it is 4/20. So I figured we might as well listen to some relaxing tunes since I plan to be as relaxed as possible all day. Anyway, my favorite vacation song is an easy one for me to choose. It's Kokomo by The Beach Boys. I live in Kokomo, but not the one the Beach Boys are singing about. Unfortunately, the island paradise in the song is fictitious. The real Kokomo is far from the sea in North Central Indiana and is a gritty factory town. But I can dream, can't I?
Composed by John Phillips, Scott McKenzie, Mike Love, and Terry Melcher for the soundtrack of the movie Cocktail starring Tom Cruise, the song was a huge hit in 1988, reaching #1 in the US, Japan, and Australia. They wrote the song while on Key Largo, and the fantasy island Kokomo is located "off the Florida Keys" according to the lyrics.
The song offers the usual layered harmonies the Beach Boys made famous, but it adds the steel drums referenced in the lyrics. It's an unusual song for several reasons. For one, Brian Wilson was not included on the original recording because of scheduling problems. He has, however, performed the song in concerts with the group. And Wiki notes,
The "Kokomo" single backed with "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard was first released through Elektra Records in July 1988. It peaked at the #1 position on the Billboard charts on November 5, 1988 after knocking out "A Groovy Kind of Love" by Phil Collins. This meant that it was The Beach Boys' first #1 hit in the United States since "Good Vibrations" in 1966, making it the longest time span between two number one hits in America for a band (22 years). It is also their only #1 hit not written or produced by Brian Wilson. Interestingly, the original version of "A Groovy Kind of Love" by The Mindbenders had knocked the Beach Boys' song "Sloop John B" out of the #5 position in May, 1966. After spending just one week at the top of the charts, the single was knocked out of the number one spot by The Escape Club song "Wild, Wild West".
There are many great vacation songs. Pretty much anything by Jimmy Buffett is a vacation song. And there are lots of summer-themed songs as well. I'll put the video of "Kokomo" in the Tip Jar. I hope you'll share a link or a video in the comments.

by Azazello ♥ for Baja Arizona Kossacks
The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:
More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.
He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.
