From CNYCentral.com:
Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life from the NBA, and will be fined $2.5 million, the max allowed fine.

An earlier draft of this post cited a TMZ article that got all the details wrong. Apologies to all.
Update 1:
In the comments, KayCeSF has this quote from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver:
... effective immediately, I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers Association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clipper's facility, and he may not participate in any business or player personnel decision involving the team. He will also be barred from attending any NBA Board of Governor's meetings or participating in any other league activity. I am also fining Mr. Sterling 2.5 million dollars, the maximum amount allowed under the NBA Constitution. These funds will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts that will be jointly selected by the NBA and it's players' associations....
Also in the comments,
mconvente says Silver will try to make Sterling sell the team. Corroborated by (cough) TMZ:
NBA Commish Adam Silver made the announcement Tuesday ... saying the NBA will also fine Sterling $2.5 million ... and insists, "I will do everything in my power" to "force" Sterling to sell the Clippers.

Sorry for the initial misreporting, everybody! Very glad to see the detestable Sterling banned for life from even going to an NBA game, and the likely forced sale of the Clippers. Cheers.
