This article on the mass grave in Tuam, County Galway in Irish Central by Catherine Corless was where I first learned of this tragedy. On dkos xaxnar has written about it here, here and here.
Tuam Mother & Baby Home Memorial
A committee has been setup and a campaign is underway to erect a memorial to commemorate the deaths of 796 infants who were buried in an unmarked grave in Tuam, Co. Galway. A Crowd funding link and more information about the Memorial and the Mothers and Children.
There are so many sad and tragic things that happen in the world, we can not fix them all. Hard as it is to remember an evil of the past – it will be a beautiful thing to finally give those poor mothers and children some dignity and respect. Though in their lifetime they could be ignored, dismissed and forgotten it should not be so now.
People today might be ashamed of what happened but there should be no more shame for those mothers and their children.
