My aunt and my best friend, her husband, live in Gold Beach, Or. It is a beautiful little town on Hwy 101 just over the border from California.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
OK, we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

Come on down and I'll tell you all about it.
Gold Beach, Or is where the Rogue River joins the Pacific Ocean. It is a wide spot in Hwy 101, sleepy most of the year. But come the summer, the tourists, me included, pour into town. There are quite a few things to do there for a summer visit.
You can take one of the mail boat trips up the Rogue River. It is a beautiful trip up river. The jetty is usually filled with pelicans as you leave. There may be whales off shore too, depending on the time of year. You can see osprey nests, gigantic up on the top of utility poles. There are river otters, much larger than ocean otters. They play along the shore, in and out of the water, like giant wet cats. There are many forest animals along the route, which takes you to a landing of your choice where there is a restaurant along the river and a place to eat and enjoy the day. you stay there for a couple of hours and then the boat comes back to pick you up.
There are horse back trails and stables that will take you on guided tours. You can travel on the beach or in the redwoods. We have done the redwoods ride, but not the beach.
The jetty has wonderful rock walls going down to the ocean. The beach is usually littered with lots of drift wood. I like to scavenge a piece or two each year for my garden. There are not a lot of shells on the beach anymore. I miss that. But the wood gives the beach a different feel than my local beaches.
If you travel through Oregon on your way farther north, stop and see Gold Beach. You have to drive through it anyway. Its in the middle of the road!
