Sen. Jeff Merkley got a free path Monday to the cross-nomination of the Independent Party of Oregon after Republican nominee Monica Wehby failed to qualify for the Independent Party's nominating election.
With about 100,000 registered voters, the Independent Party of Oregon is by far the largest minor party in the state and its nomination is typically sought by many Republican and Democratic nominees.
Under Oregon's fusion voting law, candidates are allowed to list the nominations of up to three parties next to their names on the ballot. The Independent Party endorsement is particularly sought after because many nominees of the major parties like being able to describe themselves as an Independent on the ballot.
Both Merkley and Wehby sought the Independent Party nomination, but a five-member party caucus disqualified Wehby from appearing on a ballot that will be sent to Independent Party members.
