We know why this man is smiling.
Looks like folks
got wise to the game:
In an interview with HuffPost Live, Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi NAACP, said that Cochran could thank black voters by supporting efforts to re-establish protections in the Voting Rights Act that the Supreme Court struck down last year.
"Our advocacy towards his office is to support amending the Voting Rights Act, free of any conditions such as voter ID," Johnson said. "I think this is an opportunity for him to show some reciprocity for African-Americans providing a strong level of support for him."
Look, black voters saving Cochrans ass might be cute and funny business at a macro level, but when you get down to it, they just put a sitting Senator in office. A Senator who brings back billions for Mississippians (cough...good ol boys). A Senator who would be an ex-Senator if they didn't. The media has focused a great deal on how great and wonderful this is for Thad Cochran. Or how terrible it is for the Tea Party. But what about the key to the kingdom, the actual black voters? Not much discussion of them is there? Does anyone care whats in it for them? Thank Huffington Post for being the first to actually ask the question everyone else is ignoring (except yours truly).
Black voters might well have not liked McDaniel, but its an extraordinary thing to see our folks come out for a Republican, especially a southern patrician like Cochran. I have no problem with Democrats getting involved in GOP primaries to get the weakest opponent possible. Im in favor of it actually. But this is different. This was basically the general election, since Cochran is a highly likely victor in November when the electorate is much larger. Black voters could play the pivotal role in that election as well, buttressing Cochran even more. Cochran needs to put something on the table, dont you think?
So, in return for doing Mississippi(cough...Barbour lobby) a huge favor, how about some Voting Rights law? Thats a real question that will tell us who Thad Cochran really is, now wont it?
